Default Some people make me sick

As in my other thread, I bought a puppy on Saturday for my 4 year old son.
Yesterday the puppy got sick and had to be rushed to the vet who confirmed it had parvo.

I was given a 24 hour number from the place I bought it from in case it got sick, and when I tried to ring it last night it was continuously switched off.

I rang the place this morning and the woman said that there was no way the dog had parvo, and that the vet's test was wrong. She told me that if I didn't want to incur any vet bills (it has already cost me $260 in vet bills) then I had to take it out of the vet and take it back to her. She said they would give me another dog, and put that one back in with it's brothers and sisters and it should be fine.

I rang the RSPCA to put in a complaint, as the dog has a temperature of 40 degrees and was vomiting fecal matter, and she was just going to re sell it, but the only way they can act on it is if I actually take it back to her and she doesnt get it treated and tries to resell it. There is no way I would risk the life of the puppy to do a test to try to get them in trouble.

I would prefer to pay $1 million in vet bills to save the poor thing than take it back to her. My son is besotted with it, and I have to try to save it.

Some people shouldn't be in business.

Bugger. Sounds like this is more like a 'puppy farm' than a breeder.

Is she a registered breeder, if so get in touch with the kennel control people, I'm not sure who they are in Vic.

BTW what breed is it?

Parvo is the most serious virus a puppy can get. It starts by destroying the lining of their stomach. If not treated, they will usually die within about 24 hours.

I agree with you YM, there is no way you could risk that puppys life by taking it back to her.
Mind you, the alarm bells rang for me when you said they gave you a 24 hour number: for in case the puppy got sick!!!! So, by that I am gathering they knew it was unwell to begin with.

The RSPCA should go there anyway and test the other puppies... They might save someone from an expensive heartbreak...

Hope the both pup & son are doing ok today!

Cheers

Exactly my thoughts! Call the RSPCA back, and if that person can't help then ask to speak to a supervisor. Continue on up until you get to the very top if you don't get the answer you need to hear. Those other puppies and the parent/s need to get away from that woman! If the RSPCA don't help, go to Today Tonight. Animal cruelty is a crime, and perpetrators should be punished.

I am sure that your puppy will pull through with such a loving family waiting for it's return to health.

Let us know how it goes, my thoughts are with you.

damm - thats a pain, Parvo spreads really badly - also it can lay doment in the ground if the place is not cleaned properly after all of the other effect dog have been put to sleep,

Remember Breeders of any note will belong to the Canine Breeders Accociation, should you have any problems with the breeder &/or puppy you can go to the accocition to get action taken, Puppy farm don't have this

did you pay money for this dog?
if so a quick phone call to the tax office about the seller should annoy them at least.
bet she didnt pay tax on her earnings from the sale of a puppy.

It was from a pet shop, not exactly a puppy farm, but as soon as I walked in I had a bad feeling about buying one from the place, but when you see the look on your son's face when he sees the one he wants, I thought I would take the chance. Probably shouldn't be complaining as I could have said no to buying it and walked away.

I usually prefer to buy from the RSPCA but they didn't have border collie X labs and that was the exact dog I was after. I wanted to get it now as I have a couple of months off work and wanted to have the pup while I was at home.

The money isn't bothering me, the look on my son's face when he walked out carrying his dog was worth a million dollars, but it is their attitude that has got me mad.

Spoke to the vet this morning and he has been on an IV all night and seems a bit brighter this morning. Still has a temperature but it has come down a bit from yesterday. They are letting my son go down to see him this afternoon. Sounds positive that he should pull through ok.

Do we hunt the witches after midday??
There are a lot of conclusions being drawn here people with very little in the way of facts. One less than helpful phone-call and a partial vet report and we have the taxation dept national guard, calls for public garotings.
A little sanity please!

i'd get a written vet letter . and follow up on what the shop said .go and tell them you have complained to the Rspca. find out the law regarding the warranty of the puppy . they maybe liable for its bills.ask the woman to prove that the dog didn't have parvo . and ridicule her for telling you crap . accuse her of not having affection for animals, and tell her she would be better off putting chickens down for Kfc / red rooster. at the very least you might give her some guilt for her cold heart.

If you payed for the puppy at a pet store, it is now customer related, meaning if you wish to claim wrong doing of a merchant, the, dept of fair trading, is the best place to have it arbortrated.

As above, if you dont want to see any more puppy's being put down for the same , 3 written complaints to the rspca and they are compelled to act.

Good luck mate !

I think the fact the pet shop owner offered a "swap over" on the dog is enought to set alarm bells off in our heads, considering this is a live animal we are talking about, I would safely conclude that people would have a right to be ****ed off about it. I would name the place and let us all know where NOT where to buy a pet from. Hope he pulls through ok.

The problem with licensing is that a dog needs a licence. It should be people have to go through a test and get a licence to own a dog. Some people are just plain idiots. Those clowns need to be shut down.

Good news, visited Rex at the vet this afternoon and he should be home the day after tomorrow as long as he can tolerate food and water. Little bugger was too busy trying to bite the drip in his arm to even notice we were there.

Great news, YM. Now there shouldn't be anything keeping Rex and your son getting back to scrambling around under your feet.

Glad everything worked out.

Fantastic news YM...

You do need to follow this up for two reasons though YM.
1st being that if any other pup is still sick, its not a nice way to die (so complain to RSPCA and demand they spot check the health of the other pups - if the pet shop owner doesn't like it - tough)
2nd being that parvo can lie dormant in a yard for years.. I have been told that pups can be vaccinated but may still get the virus (I dont know how true that is, its just what my vet told me when my puppy died of it)

But on a lighter note, bet your little boy is too excited to sleep tonight :

That is so disturbing, I know what I'd like to do to anyone who harm's a poor defenceless animal in this way, some people need to be shot, My girlfriend told me of a story that she read on the net, there was some people that were shark huntting and for bait they were using live puppy's, there was a photo of a lab pup on the end off a line, this make's me EXTREAMLY sick and ANGRY, man I wish I could be left in a room for just one min, with these people.

I heard that as well. Apparently the virus stays live for about 12 months even after the cells are frozen. I have spent the day disinfecting everything in my house, threw out all of his toys and bought him new ones, washed his bed etc to make sure he doesn't get sick again.

As for where I bought him from, i will do my research and try to do something about it. If the pet shop bought him from a puppy farm, whilst I don't agree with them in principal, I still think these puppies that are produced in this way deserve a chance in life.

Live and learn I say. Hopefully he will be home in the next day or so. I think even Gavin (the cat) is missing him.

Thanks for all of your support guys.

With all the news latley about the new laws passed in NSW regarding cruelty to animals, you would think that the RSPCA would at least take the time to look into this matter. Regardless of which state.

I hope your puppy gets well soon

Yup, that's what I've read, that lots of bleach is the only way to kill it. If you havn't already, might be a good idea to do a lot of reading about Parvo before you go and pick up the poor little pup.

http://www.google.com.au/search?q=parvo

Hope it all works out well for you, the pup and your young boy.

Glad the little bloke is pulling through! A pup is not like a toaster, where you can take it back and swap it for a working model if there's a problem.
I'd try the bleach idea, as I've heard that Parvou virus can survive in the ground for a long time, and I'd hate to think of the little bloke going through the same thing again!

Great news!

Rex is home, and seems to be really good. More lively than the day I bought him. Have a strict medication and diet regime for the next couple of weeks, and has to be quarantined for another month, but all looks good.

Ethan is so excited to have him home.

Good to hear YM.

Its great to see somebody care so much for animals that can't fend for themselves. Good on you! :1syellow1

Now make sure you have him vaccinated and microchipped, if its not already done.
