DVD Decrypter is dead.

For those that don't know, DVD Dycrypter was the best DVD ripper around. Laws have been changed which will stop all tools like this being made available to all. :monkes:

I know it is illegal to copy other peoples property, & reduces the profits of film makers, etc, etc, but it's a great tool to use so as to protect your original copy,the kids only get to handle the copy while the original sits in it's box on the shelf.

I use it, its very good..
I only use it, to make back up copies of my originals.

I thought it was a joke when I read the subject line, or that maybe you were having trouble with it running on your PC.

That's not good news at all. It's a handy tool that can be used for good as well as the rather obvious illegal uses.

RIP DVD Decrypter, you will be missed by those who did not keep a copy of your installer.

If you're quick you can still find the latest version on some mirror sites. The author of DVD Decrypter has been ordered to inform all his mirrors that they must remove it, but if you're quick, you'll still find it (as I did).

It's probably a good idea to grab the latest version (v3.5.4.0) if you don't already have it, because soon you'll find it hard to get.

I found three installers for it. One on each partition of the HDD, I really should clean this PC up.

Yeeeha!

I save all my installers in a folder called "My Downloads" in my "My Documents" directory, then I got sub directories for graphics, untilities, games, etc etc for all the different types of applications. I'm a bit of a tidy freak.... not that you could tell if you saw the state of my house :yeees:

I have a folder that I call "My Stuff" I have a subfolder inside that for installers another for pics etc, but somehow everything and anything finds it's way inside those folders.

The other drives would have been backups from reinstalling. I need to reinstall windows again soon it's being a PITA, so I'll back everything up onto a DVD then (then another because you know it's going to go missing when you really want something).

Oh wow, didn't know this... better make a cd copy of my version. I need it to backup (*cough splutter*) copies of my original dvd's.

It sure will be. And if people don't have a copy or the latest version, they'd better hurry & get a version because according to this site http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/6501.cfm companies with vested interest are taking legal action & making mirror sites remove it.

I've never used DVD Decrypter but you all realise there are other utils out there that can decrypt DVD's? I personally use cladDVD. It's nice and small and does the job. Get it from http://www.clonead.co.uk. The site also has detailed instrctions on how to backup your DVD's to AVI and DVDR format (and has a list of and links to other utils you'll need to do it). Purely for archival purposes of course...

Yeah, there are other utils out there, but DVD Decrypter was (is?!?) definately one of the best.

Besides, if legal pressure is being applied to the author of DVD Decrypter, no doubt it will happen to the authors of other utils that do the same job... :(

I think you'll find that DVD Decrypter is the first, original & best, most if not all other similar apps are direct copies or mdified versions of DVD Decrypt

DVD Shrink is my fav tool for doing this, had so many issues with DVD Decrypter when i first got it, so think its a pile of rubbish IMO

HDD space is cheap and dual-layer discs are getting cheaper. Soon you won't need any kind of decryption at all just the latest version of Alcohol 120% ;) Some movies already fit onto a 4.7Gb DVD like The Boondock Saints (thank God, I love that movie don't want to lose it to some scratches, almost impossible to find). 1:1 copy is where it's at.

You need to decrypt before copying.

I'm sorry, I don't understand. Could you explain for me.

My understanding is that all movie studio DVD's are copy protected by an encryption code, to copy the DVD the encryption has to be cracked. Then the cracked copy can be copied anywhere you want, including 1:1 copies.

I thought that only a certain part of the DVD is encrypted, playing is not a problem only copying. Same as some music CD's that are copy protected, they can be played on any CD player/ROM but try and copy it and the copy fails.

There is a prog called Alcohol 120% which takes care of this you don't actually have to sit there and decrypt and repack the entire DVD and lose the menus and features. It get's updated with the latest protection types fairly often as well. The thing it doesn't do is shrink the files and so the need for DVD-R that is equal or larger size than the original.
