Struggling to find work

Hey guys,

At the present time I am unemployed after being laid off before new year due to a downturn in my owners company, and am looking for a job in Sydney. I'm 19 and have fast food management experience, and also am able to get a van and do delivering of some sort. If anybody has or knows of anybody with jobs available, or even a bit of work you need doing, I can install sound systems on cars also.

It's a little far fetched but In less then a month I've put out over 200 applications and have had no such luck, aspiring to buy am investment property this year, I need to get the employment ball rolling quickly.

Have you had a look into working at the mines? I don't know much about it but I have heard they are always looking and pay is excellent, as long as your mrs/kids don't mind a change in scenery or they don't mind you being away for weeks at a time. I joined the ADF at an old age and it took a bit for my kids to get used to going to a new school and the mrs to find work.

You have a van eh. Maybe look into being a Courier, always courier jobs around...provided you're allowed to do such a job on P plates???

Apart from that, perhaps go get a forklift licence, normally there are a few forkie jobs around, the pay isnt bad. Ill come join you if you do this

If you can weld ill pay you cash for a couple of small jobs for my wagon haha.

Leaving Sydney isn't an option for mining or anything, me and the girlfriend want to set up camp here in Sydney, get the investment and set ourselves up to start a business in the coming years. Thank you though

What Chris said... Jump onto blue dog training get yourself a construction white card and head to Queensland there will be plenty of trades assistant type jobs up there.

There are 3 plants going in up there and two huge ones Gorgon and Wheatstone well under way in WA also.

Demand for people of all disciplines will be huge which gives less experienced people that some times hard to make first step in the door. Also means one less 457 worker ....but that's another topic

Yes im pretty keen, by the way my job is going at the moment (comfy but the pay isnt enough to me) ill very likley jump ship to do something else (which'll have to be after i return from WA in May).

Anytime any Australian ever asks for job advice the most common response is always mining. Is it really a job that anyone, unqualified or otherwise, can just fall into?

Do you wish to remain in fast food for any decent period of time, ie. do you want to make a career out of it?

If not, I would suggest getting some qualifications up your sleeve. Try and get an apprenticeship (it may help to do a pre-trade tafe course), or if a trade doesn't interest you, go to Tafe and get qualified in what does interest you. When times are tough, employers can afford to pick the best and most qualified (unfortunately fast food experience doesn't count anywhere except for fast food outlets) You're struggling at 19 for work, I'm sure you don't want to struggle to find work for the rest of your life.

While this may not help you in the short term, it will in the long run.
GFC proof your career as best as possible, while in an economic downturn people may not be eating fast food as often, they still need other essential services like plumbers/electricians/mechanics etc

I'm 45 and am a self employed electrician, been in business for 20 years & employ 8 blokes & w girls. Doesnt sound that big a business when i say it like that but all the guys i have known over the years that have grown bigger are all now smaller, broke or working for someone else....
I would suggest looking at all of the trades that people don't seem to want to do anymore. Mechanic, bricklayer, tiler, plasterer, boiler maker, fitter, etc. We are in Melb but I hear older blokes always talking about not being ale to find younger guys willing to do the harder jobs. Some of These jobs now pay very well, let you start a business very easily and are always in demand. Far better then fork lift driving.....

I am attempting to move out of fast food, but it's hard as everyone wants experience or cheap labour. I am currently studying a diploma of management and will do advanced diploma upon completion.

The position to interview people who on paper aren't suitably experienced or qualified, even though they may be fantastic at the job once trained.

Yeah everyone jumps on the mining bandwagon, but it's not an excellent way of life, fly in fly out, long days in some of the hottest driest parts of the country. That sort of lifestyle doesn't interest me no matter what they pay. I'm not one to judge quality of life by how much money I earn

Did they apply yes many times but ended up getting in through mates..

And on the people need more bricklayers, mate there like rooftilers and concrete gangs, there every were in the SE of melb..

I know your pain mate. Was laid off in Nov 11, still unemployed, now I am returning to tafe as we are so used to now having one wage, we can make it work. However I am just so dis heartened with the whole exp of looking for work. I had an interview 2 weeks ago for a job, they turned me down, even though I possesed every skill, but experience meeting sales targets, then today the job is re listed. That annoys me as I know how to operate aa business, so what if my previous employment has not required me to meet targets, I still had to sell to make a living. The closest I got to a job was oct 12, but my cardiologist would not pass my medical due to me "maybe" having to lift 30kg on the odd occasion. Now I am on disability, and going back t tafe, but I would much rather have a job.

I have looked into getting a trade such as mechanic or auto electrician, but from what I can gather the money is just crap. They wonder why there is no one takings apprenticeships in Sydney. I have rent and such to pay, and trying to do that off 180-250 dollars a week for 40 hours work is a joke?

how long till you get your full licence? hills bus have 50 new full time drivers positions they are having trouble filling. you need a full unrestricted MR licence and a bus driver authority. they are a good company to work for ( I work for hunter valley buses same company)

ok worth keeping in mind if nothing else comes along you can typically clear $1000 to $1200 with a bit of OT. it's a fairly easy job and the company has interests in Sydney Melbourne Hunter valley quenbeyanne and Yass and looking at WA and QLD for acquisitions so there is scope to transfer if you want a change

I was living in Newcastle early last year for about, 4 months. Could not find work and I was living with friends and as such couldn't help out with household expenses so I packed up and moved back to QLD to live with my parents :/

I got a job the day I moved up though. Which is a plus. Downside is that living here in Gladstone is stupid expensive for someone with a "normal" job and not someone who is in the LNG projects.

ive driven one for 15 years
i drive 2.5 ton a 32 ton and a 48 ton
i too have a diploma in management that my company put me thru, i dont use it, am not in a position to use it and dont really see a spot opening for me in that area tbh, but they offered it, it was free (as long as i passed) so i jumped at it as its not a bad thing to grab every bit of training thats thrown your way

forks licences are now classed as high risk and its photo id like your drivers licence (well it is in sa anyway)
when i did the course many many years ago it was two days and 180 bucks
its prob double that now
its worth spending the cash imo to go and get one
once you have a fork licence and get some skill in driving it you can move onto bigger machinery if it interests you
theres always forkie jobs around in each state

maybe get a mr or hr licence as well, theres always openings for truck work
its the lifeblood of australia in the transport industry

you might have to fork (pardon the pun) a bit of cash out at hte start to get some licences but it will get you work and get you earning some half decent money
youre still young so do it all now and you could set yourself up bigtime

They may be able to help you connect with an employer too - they have the linkages and expertise and get paid if they find you a job, and if you are employable and want to work, you're the type of client they love.

Thanks guys. On my ps I am able to do mr license, but I would rather do HR once I have my full license. As for an extra 300 bucks It then allows me to drive LR MR AND HR vehicles (surely doing the top license allows you to drive all classes below it?)

Forklift license would definitely be useful as there is a lot of openings.

I have drawn up a full business plan, once I have acquired my house loan and got some equity the business will be something I can move onto. If I start the business now, the investment property suffers, and for me that's more important.

IMO you should be looking into your business. The only reason I say that, to get a loan you need to have work history and be at your current Job for a set amount of time. Not many places will give you a loan if you have worked for less than 6 months at a place of employment. A home loan may be longer. Also need a savings history to, not just a lump sum, but proven amount put away each fortnight.

I have a savings history since I was fourteen of consistent savings that has steadily risen as pay has gone up, that until I was laid off had not been touched. So long as I have 6 months work history with an employer, and paired with my girlfriends work history of 3 years we shouldn't have a problem.

The idea behind getting the investment, is so that I can get collateral behind us in the home, while on the rental market, we will be able to get a lot of equity behind us, that will make purchasing our own house in approx 5 years significantly easier. Also getting a small personal loan in a couple of years or refinancing the home loan will be significantly easier, due to having significant equity.
