Default Total running costs per km?

Hello all,

With some changes at work recently i may need to use my XF falcon occasionally for some work related things. My boss and I have been trying to work out a suitable cents per km amount that he can pay me for me using my car for jobs.

Including,
petrol (gas or ULP),
rego,
insurance,
maintenance,
tyres
& costs towards buying another car when it dies (based on 300,000)

My calculations came up with about 21c/km so i was thinking if he paid me 30c/km it should be good. If anything i just want to make sure i am on top and have not lost by using my car for work.
I know i can keep log books etc for tax but i would prefer doing it this way..

Anyway, just interested what your thoughts are on this subject, should it be more?

Its amazing when you sit down and go through the figures, you realize the amount you pay in fuel is really only a small part of the TOTAL cost of owning and running a vehicle.

Thanks.

Erik.

Well... I've never tried to work something like this out for my car... but I'll give it a shot...

Petrol = $3,775.20/year
Rego = $827/year
Insurance = $750/year
Maintenance = Say about $300 a year max (including tyres and normal oil, sparks, filter etc)
Total = $5,652.20/year and total km's per year is about 20,800.

So that's... $3.68/km. Wow. That's pretty expensive... or I've worked it out wrong?

$5,652.20 divided by 20,800kms = about 27c a km. i think you had it around the other way.

The tax department states that you can get 63 cents per klm re-imbursement...I'd go for that rate

If that was the case you would be paying $76544 a year :dr_Evil:

I get 73.4c/km for any km's done during work time and $60 a day to drive to site (87km round trip). My car does sit out in the salt air in Kwinana tho.... and it gets covered with a fine white dust (from one of the plants nearby) that seems to embed itself into the paintwork

That 63c / km probably includes depreciation on an average family sedan (probably averaged out over 3 years)- so 3 years ago an BA XT would have been about 30k now its worth about 18k - there would be 4k/ year worked into that 63c per km - mind you you woulnd't see that 4k unless you were doing a heap of kilometers though.

Going back through my years of records I find the running costs for an EF XR6 I had (when petrol was 75 cents / litre) were 21 cents per kilometre exclusive of finance costs.
Fuel made up around 9 cents of that so at todays prices it would equate to 14.5 cents / km fuel cost for a total of 26.5 cp/km.

Cheers
Russ

As has been posted before the taxation department allows for you to claim 63c/km for up to 5000km/year for your type of car.There is no need to keep records unless you claim more than the 5000kms per year. This how I have done mine for the last few years and found it by far the easiest way of doing it.have a look at there website below,it may help you out a bit more.

Depreciation is the biggest hidden cost. It comes back to bite you at trade in time.
