Depends on the store. Smaller stores only have day fill as they don't make enough money to afford nightfill.
They can start anywhere from 5 or 6pm until 5 or 6am.
Time worked between midnight and 5am is paid at a higher rate.

I was night fill manager up until about 2 months ago at Woolworhts. I had been doing nightfill for about 4 years. Now im Duty Manager at night. We did nightfill from 7:00 'til 12midnight. The time goes quite fast too because you always have something to do. Also you should get a higher rate after 9 on a Saturday night.

And with Woolies the fill rate is expected to be 60 cartons an hour. It's total crud.

Coles perspective is that if youre a casual you are worth nothing and you have no chance of overtime. Where i worked (was a smaller store that had not long opened but was doing ok) we did 8-12 shifts however i usually ended up staying till 2am or so. Fill rate isnt set but we aimed for 52 cartons/hr.

If you can, get out in the back dock - easier job ;).

I too have risen to the heady ranks of Duty Manager from night fill but I work for the opposition. But basically our fill rate is averaged on 45 cph but some stores fill differently to others. Most night fill is carried out between 6pm- 12.Penalty rates apply after 12 so companies don't like paying extra. Our team only work 4 hours so as to avoid a 10min break which eventually if not controlled properly becomes 15 or 20 X 15 fillers you can miss putting the load away by a considerable amount. At these rates there is little time for stuffin about so the time goes quickly. As time goes by the major retailers are spending millions on newer systems to put stock on shelves thus reducing the need for fillers. August would be the best time to really start looking but if you apply now with no success then it would be wise to reapply in august/sept. You can apply online for Coles nightfill jobs @ http://careers.colesmyer.com/home.asp?ref= you will need a strong back and most times males will be put into heaviest aisles drinks/dogfood/cleaning. GOOD LUCK :

Not in our store.

Was your store open or closed during your fill?
Did the fillers break down the load into aisles or was it mixed?
Were you able to take pallets out into shop?

Sure was open, and with our first manager we werent allowed to put pallets in the store (was rather small with only 8 aisles so there wasnt enough room), our second manager let us if we wanted to but we always tried to avoid it, again due to the lack of space.

If i ran the fill (which i usually did with help of DM), we would load the trolleys according to aisles - our load was all over the place when it was delivered so I would go thru and pick out everything from aisle 7 for example and put it on one or 2 trolleys to save the fillers having to run all over the store.

Our store is buisiest from 6-8pm with fillers starting from 7. Small load is 10-15 pallets and large xmas loads up to 45.Only allowed 2 drink pallets on floor before 9pm. 15 aisles all up. All breakdown done by NFM and 1 other, up to 6 or 7 hours breakdown time each, kidding that aint hard on your back. 1.5 - 3 hrs just to crush cardboard on bigger loads. Been DM for about 12 months and put on about 10kgs cos I'm not doing as much phisical worg but my back is VERY greatfull.
Store open 24/7

How very true - anybody who's thinking of doing a nightfill job and hasnt done it before - be warned, the first few nights you will be absolutely stuffed. And if you're not, you should be!

My mate does woolies night fill. Usually he works 7 or 8 to 12pm. But occasionally works to 1 or 2am. Good money apparently. I would do it as a second job as im usually awake to 3 or 4am everyday but apparently you get taxed hardcore on a second job so it defeats the purpose.

At my store (woolies salamander) the night fill people normally start at like 5 or 6 and finish normally when they are done which is normally between 9 and 11..And for those locals who know this store is quiter large now.
As for me i on alot of times have done produce night fill, (midnight-8 or on odd occasions 12-12, then also 3-12) but yeah the pay gets increased for out of store hours so its good pay, plus you dont have to deal with customers and as said there is always something to do so the time goes really quickly. Plus at that time you can work at your own pace even if slow you can get everything done...So you might want to do other departments aswell, as also a few guys in my department do like midday till 9, or even they can change hours to finish at midnight..
Hope at least some of this post made sense.

Just stay out of Perishables. I used to fill Dairy and Freezer, and I was constantly sick.
Thank God a full time position in Systems came up, and I've been doing that for about 4 years now.

When I was 17 and doing casual fill I was on about $12/hr. I think it has since gone up a little though.

you could always try doin nightfill for a kmart or big w. there really is no set cartons per hour thing as its basically "what comes in goes out that night". i used to do kmart night fill and that was 6 till 10. its later during christmas trading. worst shift i did was 7pm till 4am. only problem it is more seasonal than supermarkets. i got out at the right time. now im doin back dock during the day

I do nightfill with Safeway, and we work from 10pm-6am. We are supposed to be doing an 80 case rate from the floor (i.e. when everything has been "dropped" in the aisles). When you first start, it can be really hard work, but you tend to get used to it after a while. It gets much easier once you know where everything is, (up until they rearrange the shelves).

It's so much better working when no-one else in the store. There are no stupid, "where is this?" questions. where the product is right in front of their eyes.

Damn how many nightfillers are there here.!!!!

I nightfilled at woolworths from 1999 to 2005. 2 commenst are wierd here. People mention carton rates of 50 and 60. This MUST include spotting/splitting, loosestock/cappting down, filling, clean up, capping up, and face up.

Where i worked we often were not allowed to take the pallets out into the store, as the store was quite small (8 isles).

Regarding fill rates. Our whole nightfill effort was rated from clock on to clock off, i cant remember the rate though. Filling rates were also taken every night, and you were frowned upon if you didnt keep up a 125fill rate.

It was excelent where i was, all nightfillers were within 2yrs of each other, and the nightfill manager was 2yrs above me at school. I did end management (promo stock) and did nightfill management for a while as well.

Its good work if you dont mid the late nights (4am was usual every few weeks, and almost every night went to 2am ish). Pay as a perminat for me was $14.70 iirc, casual is over $17iirc.

Its not tooooo giving if you work days. I worked 35hrs a week at woolies and 38hrs at an engineering firm, that wasnt overly fun for the 6weeks i did that!!

Thats 2 people I want to stab.

(1) Customers, customers should die.
(2) Planergamers - LEAVE THE STOCK ALONE

also I'd like to stab Greg Yates and Ziggy, Area and region managers for Region 2. YOU both are the most patheic "management" group ever.

/end rant
