Default Brake Specialist Recommendations (Melbourne NW)

G'day all, Bloody Hot...

Changed my font pads today and noticed that the front left caliper outer pad has been dragging. This was due to a siezed (floating) caliper mounting bolt. The outer pad had just started to scorch the disc due to no meat left whilst the other pads had more than 50% left.

Since this forum has been good to me before with recommendations, I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a brake specialist in the north western suburbs of Melbourne. I want to get the caliper overhauled and a complete brake fluid flush.

Keep the (amber) fluids up,
Rob

For the overhaul of the caliper, I would use Brakes Plus in Fawkner. Glen is a decent bloke and their prices are good for brake items. Other items are quite dear, but they are cometitive on brakes.

As for the flush, buy a brake bleeding tool and 4 bottles of Castrol Dot 4 and you could do it easily enough yourself. The bleed nipple is a bit of a shocker to get to on the S2-3 front calipers though. From memory, the S1 fronts had much better access.

All the best with it,

GK

Thanks George, I will give Glen a call. I've tried those bleeding tools before but I wasn't that confident with it. Air still got in. This was rectified with a mate pumping the pedal as I was spannering each nipple. As the caliper needs overhauling the system will require bleeding anyway so they may as well flush it at the same time. Besides, I had no joy working in this stifling heat in the garage fitting the pads yesterday. :yeees:

No worries hords,

I've been meaning to finish of the caliper paiting job on the sedan and start the same job on the wagon. I'm not a fan of the heat either, especially a few days in a row!

With regards to the full fluid flush and caliper overhaul, make sure you get a price over the phone, so then you can try to beat it down a little in person.

Also, make certain they know it's indeed a full flush you want, not just the brake reservoir flushing.

I would ask specifically what is involved in the full flush, as sometimes some places have quite differing ideas of what is what if you get me?

All the best with it,

GK

Thanks again George, Finally got it done last Friday (was on holidays in QLD).
Glen was a top bloke to deal with. Had both front calipers overhauled and a full system flush done for $190. Best of all he said it would be ready in about an hour and a quarter with a full looking workshop. Got back in about an hour and a half and it was all done. I hate repairers that quote a rough time and you go back/ring after that time and they're still not even near finished. The only concern to me was that while it was getting worked on I would receive a call on my mobile. He showed me a caliper piston that had to be replaced from fretting resulting from a similar problem to mine. But fortunately mine were alright. He did inform me that the shims were missing but not really a concern. I told him there were no shims when I replalced the pads (probably disposed of previous pad change). These shims are now obsolete apparently so I may source the wreckers.

Cheers,
Rob
