Default Limited Edition Cortina..ever heard of them?

Hi guys,
I was out looking for a second car today and came across a really nice Cortina.
On closer inspection, it had Scheel sports buckets with SSE( i think it was) and the rear was also trimmed in the same type of grey trim.
It had under dash air, full console with tape deck etc. still intact.
S-pack dash, 250, 4sp, bobtail spoiler, tint, alloys and red duco.
There was a badge on the dash that read SSE or something.
The weird thing was, it was advertised as a 79 TF limited edition.
It had the TF bumpers but TE tail lights.
I asked the guy what it was and he said it was a rare Cortina TF.
I said, its got TE taillights, he said no they are TF, i said no way TF go further across the back, he reackons that is XLE, i said TE's and TF's didnt have a XLE option, it was Ghia for top level, then i said TF weren't made until late 80, Then he agrees that they are TE tailights but it was a change over model.

Any thoughts

My TC was an XLE and the TD had XLE, TE and TF the GHIA was best.

I think he is making stuff up to get a better price, check the complaince plate for options, bet you find nothing odd on them.

Strange ... parents used to have a 1980 TE 6GL with the S-pak option (ex-demo/dealer vehicle). Had the driving lights and overriders on the bumpers ... also had the vinyl roof as well (thought it was a GHIA only option).

Also had the thicker black 4-spoke steering wheel as well.

Can't say I have seen a TF with TE taillights though ... I'd say it was a bitza vehicle the previous owner had added things to ... or might have been in a decent accident and used odd parts to fix it.

Was a great car that ... was straight when they sold it ... 4.1L 6-cyl 4-sp manual. Quicker than all the Falcons of it's time.

I think he's having you on there is a few differences as in the bottom pics of the TE & TF are not only the bar & T/lights its the rear roof panel air vents & the TF has bigger side windows

Just called the S-Pack like this one!! My bobtail is long gone as is the 6 which is in the shed. Soon it will be going back in.

The badge on the dash has a map of Australia with the build nomber, in my case #377.
I did have #76 a while back which was Marigold in colour. The chassis number also matches the build number. BENT 8 where did you find this car i'd like to have a look myself??

Wouldn't the compliance plate determine wether it was a TE or TF? If it was one of those limited edition TE's it sounds like it has had a bit of a retrim... I've seen a few, but none with a grey interior.

buickman that blue TE is CLEAN.
I wouldn't mind getting a straight TE and doing a build-up.

There was only ever 500 TE S-Pack's made, each one numbered. TF also saw S-Packs but that was just a sporty model in the line up. Yeah never heard of grey trim either, sounds like ESP seats or cloth have been used.

It was my sons car it sold it recently as I was nagging him to either sell it as V8 with no engineers or convert it back to a six & rego it and sell it as a 6 I was sick of it taking up space iin my garage. He spent a fair bit of time and money on it but never got it to its true potential mech wise. I think the new owner would be working on that part of the car.A pic of the engine bay. i think the TE's look neater

Here's an old photo of one, side stripes missing but you can make out the rear spoiler (disregard wheels and scoop)
Panel between tail lights was blacked out also. Sounds like someone's just fitted TF
bumpers to the one you saw.

If it still has interior seats and numbered badges buy it, it's rare. Or better still tell me where it is!

I had a TE X pac. Not worthy of mentioning on here cause it only had a 2L Escort motor in it. I cared about fuel economy even way back then.

TF bumpers are plastis and the indicators do wrap around a bit more. Just got home from work and i'm going to look at it. My bumpers are TE. They are black from the factory as is the panel between the tail lights like someone said before.

I had 2 XLE's , TC & TD , Brother had 2 Ghia's TE & TF . When I bought my XD wagon , Peter Warren gave me a "loan car" (Demo) while the XD was being detailed , it was a 1980 Cortina X-Pack or S-Pack , alloy wheels, sports seats , rear spoiler , sports dash ,4.1 , 4 sp , similar to what you describe . Might have been a LTD edition but definately not a mixture of a couple of different models .

This one is not a mixture of a couple. It is 100% S-pack TE, #346 to be precise. An absolute gem!!!!

Just went and look ed at it and took it for a spin and it is a very nice car. The interior is absolutely immaculate and 100% in tact as per the factory, the air con even still works. Only thing is the paint isn't the best so the car would probably suit someone wanting to maybe restore the body and paintwork. It's advertised at $1999 but you could probably get it cheaper.

Was it still advertised as a TF, it had TF limited edition on the passenger back window from memory.
I see what you mean now with the painted bumpers, i didn't pay that close attention to them, just noted they were black and figured TF as i dont think i have ever seen black TE bumpers.
Thanks for checking it out, perhaps someone would be interested, i guess it would hold similar value to a ESP 6cyl from that era and make a great resto.

How about these cortina's , shame they didn't get to Australia.
Ford Cortina XR6

Manufactured by: Ford Motor Company of South Africa, Port Elizabeth, Cape Province, Republic of South Africa
Years produced: 1981 - 84
Price at launch: unknown

Modified Cortina XR6 The Ford Cortina XR6 Mark V, which was only available in four door form, was powered by the 3.0 litre (183 cu. in.) It was launched in 1981, following the 3.0S Mark IV, and was powered by a 140 HP Essex V6 engine, coupled with a four speed gearbox. The rear suspension of this car was a unique five-link setup instead of the more fragile trailing-arm system of the European Cortina. The reason for this modification was to cope with South African road conditions.

Mid-June 1982 brought about the birth of the Cortina XR6 Interceptor. This was a real true blue Ford and has become a very sought after collectors item. This car included modified exhaust headers, camshaft, cylinder heads, high compression pistons, a 3.08 differential and, most important, three 42 Webers. This very special car also boasted 13" alloy rims. This combination became a legend on both race track and on the street. Only 250 of these were ever made.

Between 1981 and 1984 variations of the XR6 included the XR6 TF (Team Ford) which sported a white paint job with Ford blue striping and Interceptor rims.

A very limited edition was the Cortina X-Ocet. The car was similar to the Interceptor except for its being fueled by a 450 cfm Holley.

Yeah i told him it was a TE as i have one exactly the same one, albiet with a V8. I was going to buy it but the paint isn't all that crash hot and i'm looking for one in exc condition as a "collector" if you know what i mean? Like i said if someone was looking for a project or even a daily driver then it is worth the $1999 they are asking, but being a car yard you always have to try and knock em down a couple. If i had more enthusiasm i would get it and do the paint but....
my missus said that i seemed upset not buying it but i was upset because i did not suit what i wanted and it would be a shame to see it go to waste. Oh well, beggers cant be choosers.

Memories...I had a TE 4.1L Ghia, Satin Spruce with the Black vinyl roof. I fitted Lovell springs, and that was about the only mod.

Went like a rocket in a straight line. Regularly made me **** myself when I had to get around a corner...

Probably the most dangerous car I've ever owned.

lol i know what you mean i had a te xpac 4.1 4speed. went hard in a straight line (when it had traction), it was frightening cornering, stoping and in the wet. also had a te ghia wagon 4.1 auto on gas with power steering, it hammered too. i used to drive it from melb to yarram every weekend and the mud flaps were ground away on angles from the body roll going over the foster hill.
