what do most folks use to remove brake fluid from the master cylinder prior to installing new brake pads

Brake fluid sucker, syringe or soak it up with a clean lint free rag , taking care with another rag in other hand when removing said rag to catch drips with other rag . If dripped on paint work DON'T rub it off pore water on it.

I just went to the local vet surgery and asked for a used syringe. Got a massive horse one - the kind that would make you cry if any doctor came near you with one. Works a treat, and the brake fluid doesn't harm the rubber plunger.

ah! so there is a dedicated "brake fluid sucker upperer".......I was wondering about that
horse needles sound good as well.......thanks for the input, much appreciated

Put a hose on any brake bleed nipple crack the nipple and pump the brakes a few times too easy. When you bleed brakes does the fluid not come out?

If you own a compressor get yourself a sucker bottle as there great for sucking all kinds of fluid, otherwise like said above a syringe works well also.

I bleed the brakes after each pad change..
A also have c.c pipette and measure bottle when C.C ing heads. Which I use on these sort of things..

i never top up the fluid. it is a closed system, so as your brakes wear, the fluid drops. i use the fluid level as a bit of a guide to how my brakes are wearing. once the fluid gets down, i know my brakes are getting close to needing new pads, and there is plenty of room in the reservoir to push the fluid back.
apparently cars with abs you aren't meant to push it back up though. i haven't noticed any adverse effects yet. |

Exactly...you only top it up if it has leaked out...or you want to change it.
Some mechanics top up master cylinder then it overflows when you change pads and push pistons back. Never had any ABS issues pushing pads back. |

Use an empty tomato sauce. You can buy new empty ones from grocery store, they work great too
