Hi All,
I realise this is a common topic, but it is one I'm struggling with. I am rebuilding my '65 4 door Cortina and japanese power is next on the agenda. (reliable power) The one restriction is not cutting the tunnel (in the unlikely event I sell it, it can be returned to original). I've seen pictures of a Mk2 with a celica gearbox in an uncut tunnel. I've heard a Toyota W50 gearbox does just fit (in that event, maybe a 3S-GTE?). I'm open to the idea of late model rotary power, but don't believe the gearboxes will fit. Anyone out there got some genius ideas? Cheers |

SR20 nissan motor? and a nissan 5 speed or something?

rb30 and a the 5 speed is a pretty skinny box, is the engine bay long enough for a rb?

I've looked at the CA18 and box conversion at www.cortina-mk1.com and they had to cut the tunnel. I assume an SR20 would have similar issues. I'll research the skyline gearbox though. Cheers for that. I've already dealt with the guilt of going japanese :P Any old ford engine would struggle to produce the same power as reliably I would think. Having said that I do have a 2 litre engine sitting around (stamped 205, late Sierra?). If anyone knows what kind of costs and results can be got from injecting and possibly turboing one of these? Would the 2litre gearbox fit in?

hey mate u will have to cut the tunnel if u dont have an auto. or u can massage it with a mallet.

5 speeds are much wider than the old 4 speed cortina gearboxs
so you have to 'masage' the tunnel in order to fit the top is cut to allow the box to fit 'up' as they have higher tops because of the shifter where as the corty box have the shifter at the front 71 corty is right if you can find an auto tunnel fit that and your set. |

Sounds like I'm limited to the blue oval then :P Years ago (young and lacking in foresight) I cut a small slot through a rib for the shifter and a hole for a 1600 floor change from an escort. So that 'box fits in at the moment. I don't imagine it would handle much past a hot 1600? As I said before I've got a 2 litre pinto, but can you make it fit a 1600 box? Would the box handle a tweaked 2 litre?
