Default Statos

Well its time for me to upgrade my car. im looking at getting a holden statesman vr-vs. i own a ford now but after driving a 5 litre statesman its just got evrything i need and just soo comfortable. is there any reason y i shuldnt get 1? im looking at spending bout $9500. i still love the fords but after a bit of a change realli. much appreciated

You could pick up a BA for around that price from teh auctions which will go just as hard and be much newer

If you can afford 25l/100k's i say go for it.
I had a 5l VR Stato and it was nice to drive, did Adelaide to Bathurst and back in 04, but around town it drank fuel like you wouldn't believe.
I regularly saw between 20-25l/100k on the trip meter.
I sold it in the end and bought an ED Ghia as my wife only used it to go shopping etc. and was way too expensive.
Plus the rear ends are worse than the Commies and wear tyres real fast and the front lifts on acceleration and look crap.

A few VR/VS Statesman's caught fire but apart from that they're a nice ride. Transmission can cause trouble in higher km cars.

I'd probably look around for a mint condition Fairlane or LTD then. Wouldn't be too hard and has all the same bits and potential as the Statesman

mmm there is alot of nice cars out there for that price with comfortability and will go as hard and way more economic. It really depends what you want it for and what you like the decision is yours we'll just offer our opinion but in the end its all up to you

I've seen VS V8 Statesmans sell for between 3 and 6 grand quite often over eBay etc.

My mate has a Stato. VS I think, he got his for 4.5K in January with 88,000 on the clock in quite good condition Find of the century, The 5 litre sounds Mint as well, he gets 11-12 out of it but lives in Kalgoorlie so traffic isn't a big problem, Had a leaking Rear main when he got it, so pulled the engine and did all the seals and gaskets and fitted new rings and is about to stick on a vortec charger.

I have always like the Statesman's my-self even being a solid Ford man there is just something i like about em, a stato driver is in a different league to the V6 Commodore and SS crowd.

the 5ltr V8 VR VS commos are slow..

the Fairlanes and LTDs are much more unique and the tyres dont get destroyed due to a wierd designed suspension setup

LMAO at you dan!! Umm yes the vr/vs stato is nice and looks hot dumped, but i find they are way to common, goodluck coming up with something original and making it stand out. I mean dumped on internationals is cool if ya dont mind stopping at the lights while others play spot the difference...

Whats wrong with the 'lane.

They are cheaper have the same grunt and have a nice interior and are easier to find.

DC LTD or NL Concorde lowered and with mags FTW

I must agree here. I would definetely go for the Fairlane. Then again if i had $9500 to spend i would invest it into a chassis and build me a 5 Window 30' A Model. (i know it would take more coin than that but it would be a good start)

If you are going for a stato, Save a bit more and get a WH!!

I had one for a year and it was brilliant, they are going for around 14k+ but it is worth it.

Just another class up from the VS.

For the guy that said they were slow, how does a Stock VS Series 3 Stato beat my manual, EL XR8, with exhuast and extractors...
With HSV headers (which are ) and an exhaust which was too big at the time, it ran a 15 flat all day long. They ain't slow.
I've never seen a Lane go close to that. The FBT's wouldn't do that.
I would never buy a Holden, but the Stato's are nicer than the Lane's.

from 100-140 he never caught up(was a VQ? statesman(VN shape).. had exhaust and i dont know what else..

We had a VR Stato with the V8. Was a ripper, very comfortable with plenty of room in the back. There were a few things that I had to fix though but I'd have it back. The motor had a nice sound too.

just love the shape of the statos thats all. fairlanes and ltds look nice but too long of a wheel base i reacon or is that just me?i dun mind bout petrol realli anymore as long as i enjoy drivin my car thats all that matters. if there are other good cars u could recommend then let me no just need to upgrade and thought a stato would be good. i heard that the stato rear ends chew the bak tyres aswell. cheers

the WH Series 2 onward isnt AS BAD as the previous models for chewing rear tyres

another car you could look at is a Toyota celsior they come with either a 2JZ or a 1UZ lexus V8
they have LOTS of awesome options but are a bit older and are around the 10k mark..

the AU lane is slightly longer than the WH Statesman (about 10cm)

Id buy a VS Stato/Caprice in a heartbeat after owning my LTD. One of my best mates had one, comfy as anything, a lot nicer interior, they sound fantastic, and will move when the foot goes to the floor. His was a HSV version though, so it was the 215kw model. Being common isn't a bad thing, parts are pretty easy to come by if something does go wrong.

Atleast the Statesman's are easily distinguished from the normal Commodore, not like Fairlanes/LTD's. It definitely sets them apart in my opinion. The reason you see so many around is that they're freaking hot.

If you can stretch your budget, go for the WH model, beautiful looking car. But i can't vouch for any of the mechanicals.

I find that very interesting, is your XR a S1 or S2
My brother-in law has a s... hot VR Caprice with lots of work done. I let him drive my EF XR8 ex chaser when i had it and he was very impressed.
I had no probs keeping up with him and apart from a cat back 2.5" mine was stock.

A Series 1 EL XR8, Genies, decent exhaust, manual.
His VS Series 3 Stock, beaten me by half a car length everytime. Ran 15 flat all day up Heathcote, single pegger, stock ratio diff, etc. But HSV headers and shite exhaust.
I've also had a few runs with my mate in his VS SS Manual, and i raped him everytime, by car lengths and then some.
I'm a Ford V8 boy, but the 304's aren't a slow piece of kit, compared to the wheezers.

DAN635, yeah funny that its as fast as a BF XT, still a bit quicker stock, and 10 years older... Only 3 tenths slower than a V8 BA Ghia though...
With his shift kit now, i bet it'd give you modded car a decent run and a half.

you lost to a statesman? maybe you should be quicker through your gear change : : .... haha nahh, just depends on the other driver ... he may get the jump on you, be quicker on take off!

bro, seriously, ur looking at spending $8G's ... hold up for abit and buy a V6 S/C'd WH or AU Fairlane ;)

Hahaha, yeah maybe i should be, but i haven't seen another stocko EL XR8 Series 1 run much better than a 15.2 down the quarter, so i can't be too shabby.
The sad thing is that whoa they run 15's, flat 15's. equal to or better than any Ford V8 of the time, espescially the barge *** lanes, which are doing well to break into the 16's.

I'm not just sticking up for the Stato's, but seriously, why are some people so one eyed, and such smart ***** when something other than their own car, or a car they like, could be better. Is it a jealousy thing, or an egotistical thing?

Mate just save your hard earned and get a nice AU2 FAIRMONT GHIA. Much underated and with few tweaks run high 14's while not costing the world to run.
'IF' you've got your heart set on a VS STATESMAN which I personally admire for its AMERICANA rear end get a supercharged one. I've driven both and the supercharged (STOCK) leaves the V8 for DEAD.
For those who reckon the 304 trumps the 302, keep this in mind.............
*Group fire injection
*2 piece rear main seal
*V belts YUCK!
*woefull rocker cover gaskets and general sealing on engine
* my car has slaughtered countless 304's/355's (keep in mind cam only fractionally bigger and head flow rates fairly similar)

I'm no one eyed Ford fan. I've ran a few VS stato's, one that sounded fair meaty - side by side with it day's after picking up my ghia and reeling off 135rwkw. Now shift kitted, 173rwkw and knowing the car better - There'd not be a hope in hell of it sticking with me.

the supercharged 6 cyl commodores have 5nm more torque than a VCT 6 cyl falcon..
thats not alot of difference for a bigger insurance premium..
id go a WH if i was to get a statesman.. they have the mighty LS1 in them which has more aftermarket support than you can poke a stick at
