Default BA-BF recall

Brakes problem in 200,000 Fords
Email Print Normal font Large font Andra Jackson
May 25, 2007 - 2:54PM

AdvertisementThe Ford Motor company is replacing the brakes hose on its popular BF and BA Falcon models Australia-wide after a brake durability problem was detected.

Owners of the models are being asked to bring their cars into Ford dealerships "as a matter of course" to have the rear brakes hose replaced at no cost.

Ford public affairs spokesman Edward Finn said about 200,000 cars are involved, covering the Falcon range from the BA which came on the market in September 2002 to the BF Mark 2 which was released last March.

"The rear brake hoses on certain sedan models are being replaced because in certain circumstances they wear excessively and the brakes lose their operating effectiveness," Mr Finn said.

He stressed the brake replacements which began this week are taking place as a safety program and are not a recall.

So far the problem has been detected in round 1000 cars.

The brake problem will be noticeable, and accompanied by a warning light, but will still allow the car to stop within the prescribed distance, Mr Finn said.

The problem of excessive wear on the brake lining is believed to stem from the high mileage the vehicles tend to be put to over different road surfaces.

Another 20,000 vehicles in New Zealand will also be subjected for brake replacements.

Lol, bit of an understatement??

Never good to hear about such instances, esp following an operating loss discussed here recently.

I'd suggest it is the safety program you do before you get order to have a recall.

At least Ford are doing the right thing about this.

Hyundai gave themselves masses of negative publicity over denying that there was a problem with Excels...only to later bow to pressure and say OK we will fix it.

I dare say that this will be cheaper in the long run than trying to rebuild a shattered reputation.

There is going to be a generation of Ford apprentices who are going to masters at bleeding BA-F brakes !!

We have actually had the car slow down and the break light come on about a month ago. Know this explains it, mum thought she was going nuts.
DAMM IT now we have to take it back again after just getting it back today.

Would be good to know exactly what it affects since dad has a BA ute, if its going to affect that I'll pass it on to him.

It does state "sedans" but its not really 100% clear.

edit: after re-reading it states "certain sedan models" so I'm going to assume its only sedans at this stage, its not on the recalls.gov.au website at the moment though.

Fronts do most of the work anyway. Had mine serviced a few weeks ago, I think I'll wait till the next service schedule and see if they mention anything about it.

they're just going to advise you that you need them replaced at your next service anyway, so if nothing goes wrong, just get it done then

Would this affect the AU in any way? I've got an August 02 model car... did they change the brake hose 1 month later?

the problem is with the high mileage cars which go up and down hoists all the time, what happens is it stretches the brake hoses. it is only on irs models (sedans only). i knew about this 3 years ago when i was told that these cars should only be jacked up on 4 post hoists with centre jacking beams and to jack them up from the lower control arms.

that is my 2 cents.

About bloody time Ford did something about this. They are quite cheeky in not actually telling anyone outright what the problem is. The reason they are finally recalling cars is because the rear brake hoses have a chronic bursting problem, and they **** out brake fluid. Nothing to do with mileage or stretching the hoses, they are just a dodgy crap part. We used to replace them all the time when I was working for Ford, and we put in countless reports to ford about this problem yet they would ignore us (and countless other dealers) time and again.

So what do we have to do? book in to the service dept for them to replace the hoses? or do we pay to get them replaced on the next service.
Cheers Mark

Is it a BA (I assume it is with the milage you mention). In that case, don't sweat it. The hand brake in all BA's is legal requirement to be fitted, but completely optional when operated - you did pay for the "functioning hand-brake" options when you bought the car right?

Ah screw it....the "BA hand brake" jokes are olde :P

I had my BF xr8 in for a service on friday (25th). I just checked the work report and it says "replaced rear brake lines as per safety directive". Car has only done 45k and has no brake issues. Its good to see the dealer taking a proactive stance. Perhaps that carton of beer last Christmas hit the mark.
