In 2010, with the world population estimated to be at 6.8 billion, and with Facebook reporting around 500 million accounts, the world’s population logging into Facebook calculates out to be about 7%.

Now, with 800 million active users, whats that.. roughly 11.7% of the World population in 2011.

That's pretty damn influential.
Really.....so Martin Cooper, the inventor of the mobile phone on which the majority of these spaceface tragics spend their lives does not get a look in?

I was tempted to nominate flappist but on reflection he was edged out by Bill Gates. Love him or hate him he founded an empire that influences everything we do today. Look at the statistics, even if you hate windows and office you deal with companys and agencies on a daily basis that use these products to facilitate your needs enen the cash registers in a lot of shops are windows based now.

Microsoft is the OS of choice of most government departments ( although some corporatised departments like the RTA do use Apple Mac), ditto for banks , insurance companies, hospitalsand the list goes on .

I'm not saying his products are without fault , far from it but they have become so ingrained they are now in almost every house and office in the county and even the world how is that for being important and infuential. Even flappist cant match that

Julian Assange. Anyone involved in social media. All this stuff going on in the Middle East is because of the above and its not finished yet.

Couldn't agree more. Face book is an internet based (written) conference call but with adds. Just like much of the web is full of irrelavant people and info trying to be more, and often succeeding, than it/they should be.

With that logic, Alexander Graham Bell is still the World's most influential/important person, despite being dead for nearly 90 years.

In reality -- I think, when you ask a question like -- " who is the most influential/important person in the world? " The answer will be in response to the here and now. Ask the question in 10 years time, you'll receive a completely different answer to the question.

If Time magazine's opinions counts on anything, here's the Time 100 list. An annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world. Here's a basic no-frills outline from wikipedia.

In all seriousness, I have two. Number one is Osama Bin Laden.

He is the sole reason we have strenuous security measures all over the world.

Second is Bill Gates.

The reason we are now so reliant on PCs and other related technologies.

Currently, IMHO the most influential person is Ben Bernanke - chairman of the US Federal reserve

Without turning this into a religious slinging match, I think its fair to say the great deciever is not a person (person being a human being).

modern:
- Mikhail Kalashnikov - inventor of the ak47
- Leo Szilard - inventor of the first atomic bomb (im 99% sure)
- Bill gates (access to practically every household in the modern world....)
- Oprah - (If she can influence the US presidency she has some power i have to admit)
- Che guevara - (south american revolutionary fighter)
- Karl Marx and frederick engels (co writers of the communist manifesto... arguably responsible for providing the theoretical framework/influence for world wars and numerous others)
- stalin
