Question Couple of Oil-Related questions

1) Is there any one single oil filter for 6cyl AU's that is better than the rest? Or are they all essentially the same?

2) I've got some of the FUCHS Titan CFX 10w-30 oil to go in at my next oil change - have heard nothing but good things about this oil. I also have a bottle of the Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabiliser as well. Would the oil stabiliser offset any benefits of the Fuchs oil, given that there would be 1L of oil stabiliser and 4.5L of oil in there, as opposed to 5.5L of oil?

Or do the benefits of the oil stabiliser just add to the benefits of the Fuchs oil??

Your thoughts guys???

i use, penrite oil, and yes there is only one oil filter, what you need is a z9 oil filter for a i6 cheers

Purolator is all I ever use mate, you could always get a K&N if you feel like spending the big dollars.

PureOne Purolator is the best
however a Ryco Z9 will do.
But the K&N ones are ok too, especially as they have a nut on the end

Seems the Lucas stuff may not be all that it seems to be!!!!
Does anyone else know of similar links with evidence for or against the product?

I only ask because at a recent service a few months back, the mechanic waxed lyrical about the Lucas stabiliser, how good a product it was etc etc!!!!

Have done a fair bit of forum-trolling the last couple of hours about the lucas oil stabiliser - for every person that brings up that link (and there are a lot who use that link as the reason for not using it), there is somebody who swears by the product and says how it's helped their car in some way - a lot of mechanics as well giving the thumbs up (and a lot giving thumbs down).

The general consensus (for those against) seems to be that the oil companies spend literally billions of $$$ on R&D, if the lucas stuff worked, they would already have the ingredients in the oil you buy off the shelf!!

Is there anybody here who can qualify these opinions with regards specifically to AU Falcons???? Any mechanics among our ranks????

Hey Dave,

I did put a bottle of this stabiliser in a few oil changes back. I have mixed feelings about what it did to my motor. In some ways when I put the OS along with some 20w/50 in, it quietened things down a bit, but found the noise came back after a few hundred k's. I attribute this to the oil being too thick for the age of the motor. At the time my motor did about 130,000km.

The next oil change, all I did was an oil flush, and I used 10w/40 Nulon Hi-Tech Fast Flowing Full Synthetic Oil and found that made the engine heaps quieter than with the stabilser. Not that the stabiliser was good, it probably is with engines that have done well over 200-300,000km. I just found it was too thick and I could hear that it wasnt getting into all the oil galleries like oil should.



Ever since then, I have been doing a engine flush at every major oil change and used the Nulon Hi Tech with a K&N oil filter and its been great ever since.

Of course, others opinions of this may vary, but I recommend experimenting on what oil is best for you.

As far as the oil filter is concerned, I was using Ryco/Purolator as well as cooper filters. They did fine for when my engine was NA. But being forced, I felt it was time to make sure I got the best I could.

My brother in law had used a K&N filter on his EF every 5000km when he did minor and major services and he said he found the filter collected more contaminants/particles than when using a cheaper brand. Plus the nut on the end of the filter was dam handy.

Now Im not certain if his findings were legit, but I did see his last oil change he did with this filter, and the old oil came out a with a bit more color in it than jet black like old oil tends to be.

Its up to you what you use, but I would say that if your changing filters and doing oil changes regularly on an NA car, you wouldnt have issues with a Z9 X brand filter.

All the above filters claim they are the best, but I would just get what you think will do the job efficiently. It will come down to if you care what you put in your motor vs CBF spending the cash so what evers cheapest decisions.

No problems Dave. I dont think you could ever harm the engine either way, but its always better to do just what the factory manual asks sometimes. Alternatively, experiment with a different oil at every 5000-10000km service and see how the motor behaves.

Chances are you wont notice bugger all, but if your attune to your car and how it behaves, you may notice a few subtleties in the engines behavior with various oil brands/types/grades.

On that note, Fuch's is a decent brand.

If you choose a brand name oil of the correct weight for your vehicle, and change it at regular intervals, you be fine. As blueoval said, you have to know how your motor behaves pretty well to spot the difference between the different oils. Oh, and for what is worth, my parents have their cars service at their local mechanics (AU series I forte and an AU series III e-gas). Their mechanic uses HPR 5 for the AU series 1 and HPR Gas 10. Cars have 150XXX for the Au series 1 and 270XXX for the Au III egasser.

Hi fellas, I realise i may be in the wrong section for a BOSS question but what you are talking about in here is sorta what i wanna know, particularly the last few posts..
My BOSS is just past 150,000km now and it's time for my next oil change.. I wanna go thicker cos there is a real subtle knock when first starting up.. but i'm not sure how thick to go cos i don't wanna be starving certain narrow galleries of oil.. I dunno much about the lifters in this motor or how well they'l flow with thick oil.. anyone able to give me a pointer?
ps: don't know what the current oil is, only had the car 4 months/5,000km
