i see my reply didnt last long :P

anyways damned if you do and damned if you dont

harold is a old mummies boy and is stuck in dinosaur times etc

why ya'll are bickering over what you drive etc in the city is pathetic
ya'll have licences you vehicles are registered etc and if you cant see infront of the obstacle then your infact too close and maybe should remove your front bumpe from the rear of the car infont ;) (just a hint)
i own both types and imho i prefer my 4wd
its slower its safe and it does on and off road stuff with ease and with city roads etc and lack of proper maintanance your better off in a 4wd cause it seems like your offroad anyways :

harold scruby for PM ay guys :

Im not suggesting you should be forbidden from driving a 4x4 drive in the city. Of course you have the right to.

It's just completely selfish.

They make it IMPOSSIBLE for other drivers to see what is going on to the left, right, in front or behind them. Trying to turn right when there's a 4x4 blocking your view of oncoming traffic... is just fantastic!!

Some mornings i'll have patrols/land cruisers/whatevers behind me, in front of me and on either side of me. My ability to judge whats occuring on the road is completely restricted to reacting to the 4x4s that surround me.

We're constantly preaching the merits of more attentive driving - look a few cars ahead of you in traffic - well, quite a difficult task when you cant actually see for the 2 tonnes of solid metal in front of you.

Falcons? Its a sedan. You can see through their windows - and actually have a sense of what is occuring more than 2 metres away from you.

Yes, yes - I know, you need the room for your legs, the kids, like to tow stuff etc etc etc etc etc. I couldnt possibly ask someone to sacrifice their comfort for the safety of other drivers... could i?

Still cant figure out why 90% of the things i see on my daily commute to work have no one in them but the driver.

I drive a 2WD Ford Territory and I can see through and around the 4WDs that surround me so I'm not sure which side of your fence I'm on 4.9 EF Futura. Please help me.

Oh and our Territory is always full of people and things that would never fit in a 2L Celica in a month of Sundays.

My dad reckons his TS Magna wagon has more room inside than a Territory.

So probably does the Falcon wagon on floorplan - but does either have 7 seats with headroom to go with, or internal height to carry goods (e.g. furniture) that fit in the Territory?

Point is most sensible people buy a vehicle according to their needs and all have equal right to be on the road. Sure there are some people who buy a large 4WD when they don't need one. Do we get some special govt police force to go around weeding them out? If they use them for weekend offroad recreation do we force them to park the vehicle on the city outskirts and roll the Yaris ('dinghy') off the trailer to go further into the city?

I don't agree with the use of a lot of these vehicles but while they're legal to own and use why berate people for having them? And as most users of this FORD forum should recognise, Ford's great achievement in creating the Territory was to provide an economical alternative for those who wanted the space and features of a 4WD without actually wanting a 4WD with all its extra mechanicals, higher fuel consumption, extra maintenance, poorer safety and so on. As its the largest selling SUV in Australia there is obviously a huge number of people who recognise this.

But as for the Hummer, that is going too far. Obscene.

My son saw a Hummer the other day. Owner was apparently a parent of a child he goes to school with and was dropping the kid off... Cam was stunned!

Hummers are the worst cars.
ugly as shit, and impractical.
we have a company here that imports them, as well as GMC's trucks.
all the H2's around here have big chrome wheels and a whole lot of other chrome shit.
id defiantly rather drive a big chevy than a hummer.

they are a big Chevy... Hummers are made by GM, not AM General like the Military Humvee

H2 = Chevy Tahoe
H3 = Chevy Trailblazer

with better off-road capability

Huh? Do you understand anything Keepleft has been writing about?

The only real issue with 4WDs/SUVs, apart from people owning off-roaders who don't really need them, is their poor level of primary safety on road - particularly stability and their propensity to rollover. (except for ones designed to minimise this - Territory, Land Rover Disco and Rangie and very recently Mercedes) They have a particularly bad history of killing people on highways, usually their occupants in solo accidents but also unfortunately anyone else in the line of fire. Apart from that what's the issue? Size - usually no bigger on floorplan than Falcon/Commodore; height/blocking views - plenty of buses vans and trucks around; fuel consumption - maybe but Territory narrows the gap; backing over kids (Scruby may have an issue here) - some cars are just as bad but Territory and some others limit the odds with cameras.

No we don't need the Hummer when you can buy a Territory if you're an on road user or something that's safe onroad like a Landie if you're going offroad.

...... xcgxl the Porsche doesn't seem to fit your theory if you get my drift!

Actually he's not .... hee hee
Keepleft comes up with some great info ... used to get knocked a lot at first but has gained a lot of respect of many users.

At least Keepleft did run over a pedestrian with his own car .... unlike someone else we know ... :

That's a bit unfair drcook! In fact it looks as though the progressive energy absorbtion has done its job (considering what it hit) - not much cabin distortion either vehicle, even windscreens intact. Hummer has a (US) 5 star crash rating. What is of real concern is the 24% rollover rating which places it among the worst (Explorer etc):

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/ncap/cars/3682.html

That wide low look disguises an unstable vehicle.

Just to point out... that NCAP rating is for the H3... that's an H2 pictured above. But the point is relevant.

The pic of the H2 does suggest that occupants were well protected in a head on crash, as does the pickup it was duelling with!

I can only say that if your hummer rolls over 1 in every 4 times you hit a corner a bit quick... then you could probably review your choice in motor vehicle... lol

Rollovers>Obversely anything with a higher centre of gravity is going to roll easer thou, Most rollover would be caused buy human stupidity.

Killing people> A lot of people still don’t where seat belts when driving remote in the country this is a big factor, Also people swerving for animals rather than just hitting it as well as driving tyred. And if a 2tonn 4WD hit’s a Lancer, obviously the 4WD is going to come off better it’s basic physics LOL.

Fuel Consumption> Any Turbo Diesel 4WD will have very good Fuel consumption and most Petrol ones aren’t that bad ether.

Backing over Kids> well I can see more out the back of my 4WD than just about any car I have driven.

The one thing I don’t get thoe is when people say, “I buy one for the safety”?? Cause they aren’t really that much safer in a accident, It’s called crumple zones you what them!!

'xcept for the Hummer eh? (photo at post 51 above). Actually the caption to that photo is pretty dumb because if it did have a big tough rigid front end the car would be fine but the occupants wouldn't be in too good shape!!!
