This thread isn't about cop bashing, I do have respect and show it if it is given. Two way street. Whatever I mention on here comes from my own actual sightings of how the force operates (I'm speaking about Victoria here), it's not from a "bad" experience because I've never had one, most of the officer's that ever pulled me over have been friendly and even asked me a technical question about my licence which they did not know & legalities of my car, I'm lucky to only be pulled over once or twice a year but from my point of view "General duties" police are the hard workers who deserve the upmost respect. TMU (Highway Patrol) sometimes come across as lazy and find it a hassle to attend some motor accidents (with the radio operator usually being most appreciative if the vehicle actually agrees to attend - it is their main role though) or answer their radios but would rather intercept cars which there is no problem with however picking on certain types of cars or people or handing out as many TIN's as possible for quota is unjust (YES - a TMU SGT admitted he had "done his quota" for the day to me - hence a warning for the vehicle being .5 inch too low).

Focus on Drink driving is all I'm strong for, not measely 3/km rubbish.

XA - Coupe has made excellent points though in the earlier reply and I agree wholeheartedly.

Anyway this topic has run it's course & answered itself I think in regards to people overtaking - interesting read though

I overtake only to the limit obviously, I tend to have a sixth sense to unmarked cars and spot them a mile away, go past them at the limit, give em a look and keep going. It's great on a motorbike when you aren't speeding I've had a few times when I just see them pull behind me (probably so they can gauge my speed) then legally switch a few lanes and get ten cars in front.

Being a P plater in a niceish car the poilce dont like me.. I dont know why but if i overtake they follow and try and make me fault or the just siren and do an rbt that ends in them getting the block out and full check over..

I just let it go now and stay a nice distance away from them.

I was coming out of Albury last sat night and came up on a line of traffic, about 10 cars all in line, all doing 95 in the 110 zone, the second front car in the line was a police car, i cruised past at 110 laughing my head off at all the sheep and drove off into the distance without any issues. No one had the balls to pull out from behind the police and resume driving at the posted speed limit!

HAHA love this thread!!

The wife will kill me for writing this but it's to good of an oppo to pass up...Years ago when the wife was just a "new girlfriend" she used to drive a tiny 2 seater daihatsu charade. while heading to mount gambier one night we came up on a slow moving bus doing around 80-90 clicks on a main highway so it's a 100k zone, the missus drops it back a gear on the "mile" straight and swings out and around the bus.....HOLY MOLEY!! it was a freakin BOOZE BUS, not only that there was a sqauddy in front of the bus near bumper to bumper, as she proceeded to round them both i looked at the copper driving the car, he had a big crap eating grin on his face, i buried my face in my hands and shook my head, thinking.."oh god were like totally screwed"... looking back at them all after passing, the coppers in the bus and the cop car were all peeing themselves laughing, pointing and slapping thighs, the sqauddy flashed his headlights a couple of times and gave us a thumbs up....nothing else happened over it.

Wow... Good to see that sensable drivers will pass if the situation allows it. I had a similar situiation out side Gundagi once. I was driving from Albury to Sydney, crusing along at 110 when i notice in my rear view mirror a cop car catching me.. the cops eventually catch up and overtake and pass me. anyway not 10 mins later i spot the cops on the horizon again, i slowly catch them still sitting on 110 with the cruise on. I come up behind the cop car indicate pull out and proceed to overtake the cops. As i do the cop accelerates so that we are driving side by side. This continues for about 2 mins until it becomes a little dangerous two cars driving side by side at 110. I flick the decel button twice on the cruise and drop back to about 106 (drop 2k's for every press of the button) and slowly the cop car pulls out in front. I indicate and pull back in. i wait a minute or so and flick it back to 110. Then i notice i'm catching the cop car again. So this time i think **** it i'm going to stay out there until i pass this guy or he accelerates away. I indicate and pull out i over take the cops indicate pull back in and slowly pull away. Then (it gets better) i notice the cops have accelerated and are 5 feet short of tailgating me. i ignor them as best i can and continue driving. this goes on for a futher 5 mins. Then out of no where the lights and siren come on and i am forced to pull over , which i do almost immediately. The first cop (female) (the one who was driving) gets out and walks up to my car. The first words out of her mouth were " do you know how long you have been speeding for?". At this stage i had had enough of the games and with relative sarcasim procceded to tell the lady cop that I have had my cruise control on since i passed the dog on tucker box and have been doing the same speed since. She tells me that I caught her and passed her and there for must have been speeding as she never speeds on the highway. I then asked her how it came to be that she originally caught me and passed me some k's back yet i hadn't touched my cruise settings. I was told to stop being a smart *** and produce my license. I then asked would i be recieving a ticket and how fast would it say on the ticket that i was travelling, sha said she would be back. I sat there for a min or so wondering what was going on when her campanion ( male cop, passanger) gets out brings my license back and tells me that this time it is just a warning that i should be more careful and not play games with cars on the highway. Can i say that i kept my trap shut and got the hell out of there. Those highway cops are something else, they truly scared the crap out of me, but at no time then or now am i afraid to overtake any car, cop or not if the situation permits and it isn't dangerous. Has anyone else had these games played?

After some work of late on my car i tend to set alarms off.
So i enjoy passing people and the police and vibrating there windows:P, They look but they don't touch, And if there going slow pass them they don't care.

Well up here in the Territory we have open speed limits, sure you guys all know this. Must say there is nothing like passing a marked car at 220km/h and knowing they can do anything about it!!!

Yes will overtake anywhere where I don't break the speed limit and it is safe.
Only problem I ever had overtaking a police car was in my old VH SS Commodore.
Driving down the Hwy at 110 and they were sitting at a side road, I checked my speed, yep 110 or close enough, looked up and they had pulled out in front of me.
I hit the brakes hard and could see the driver pointing between the seats and the guy in the passenger seat with his head turned laughing at me. Some joke.
I was now doing about 50 which is what they were sitting on so I put it in first (could do 110 in first) and just blasted around them, indicating, and stopped dead on 110kmh.
They came screaming up behind me lights and siren going so I pulled over and let my passenger get out and speak to them. We were in Armadale WA and my passenger was the Sergeant from the Cannington station who actually later became our Commissioner.
No real problem in the end but the biggest problem I have encountered whilst overtaking a Police car.

PS: With the open limit in NT you can still be done for speeding if your speed is deemed excessive for the road or weather conditions, is this not true?

Well I still have my licence. Can't be done for speeding but can be done for dangerous driving! At these speeds you must be aware of other drivers on the road. Its not like you can just drive at 200km/h+ from say Darwin to Katherine all the way, care must be taken!! Alot of my friends own Club Sports and SS's I'm the only one with a Ford and a number of times have gone on Speed Trips with no problems, safety is always no.1...

Its another yes vote from me.
I laugh every time I see a pack of cars sitting behind a cop car too scared to overtake them. I just drive on past about 5 kays over the speed limit, then pull over the left lane and watch them come past!

My brother past the cops one day doing 85 in a 60 in his old EF, they came from the other way, They didn't even bother looking back.

His wife was booked for passing on the left side with no blinker one night, A car was in the right lane doing 20, When she went to the left the car went also, So back to the right lane and so did he, She thought this guy is a smart *****, So she booted it and rounded him on the left, Lights go on it's a unmarked with baby seat in back. He booked her for it. No indicators when changing lanes, And passing on the left side, Has anyone every herd that one before passing in the left lane?

On that British show 'Worst Drivers' they called it "undertaking". Living in Perth I lived in the Left lane, must have been a novelty for alot of people to cruise there well under the limit in the right lane. Driving in Melbourne i never had much of a problem with it, always found Melbourne alot better than Sydney and Perth.

No problems overtakeing marked police on multi lane roads. It's the dipo guys that I seem to have the trouble with, for some reason they don't like me trying to pass them.

Yep of course I do. What really annoys me is when I'm on a multi lane road, with a cop car in front all the other traffics slows to a crawl with them, and clear road ahead just really annoys me.

i recon its funny as takeing the cop cars for a road test at work and seing how ppl react as we drive it around. ppl have also been know to hit the lights and when the victom pulls over just drive off and wave. guess our blue uniform looks alot like the afp lol . as for passing cops yeah i do just treat them like any other road user. have had little greif from them over speeding and every time i have been booked speeding it was fair

In my 3 cylinder beast I would overtake them no worries, but not in my ute. Don't want to run the risk of getting one of those full-car inspections. The follow-up inspection to prove everything's above board costs time and money that I don't have. I'd wait for one of the cars in front to overtake first and then scoot on past the police car while he is pulling them over

On these 2-lane highways that they have down in NSW/ACT, I'd pass anything in the right lane if they weren't doing the speedlimit.
