QR needs Electricians but the apprenticeships for next year have been advertised and will be interviewed next month I beleive you could probably get on their website and send some emails enquiring.

I wouldn't say the company is going broke, but they have ceased making their tidy profit. The apprentices they haven't sacked are 'in bed' with the boss, one retains a 70k salary plus car, he is safe because his wife is the HR manager.

Go to any of the large building sites in Brisbane and ask to see the leading hand sparks. You should get a job no probs and with the EBA provisons better than what you are currently on.

I have been in this situation two times in the last 4 years (different trade). All the best to you mate and keep your head held high. One door closes, another one opens. Cheers.

...hang on a sec. Before you people manage to get my thread closed i'll weigh into this

Compulsory super is a good thing. Sure beats paying tax to pay pensions IMO.
Annual leave, we all need a holiday. I didn't get leave loading under my AWA, no big deal.
Workcover, damn straight. If you legitimately damage yourself at work, you should be entitled to compensation. Stamp out the leechers and it would be better.

I'd like to thank those that have PM'd me and have given me a few leads, i wish this thread could stay open for those that haven't yet seen it but i am smart enough to know all the little political comments from those who aren't satisfied watching question time are going to annoy the mods and ultimately lead to thread closure.

Thanks guys!

Mate, I feel for you , I really do....As one door shuts another one opens though.

If you're a hard worker, know your stuff and have good refs to back it all up you'll find another (and probably better job at that)

If worse comes to worse you can either retrain in another field or move to the mines in North WA. They can't get enough people there and some of the wages are in 6 figures with no prior experience necessary.

I know so many people who have either been fired or retrenched over my 28 years in the work force and the good ones have always ended up better off.

I can see both sides of the union debate....Small business has been crippled over the years by unrealisitic demands being placed upon them (super, leave loading etc....paid maternity leave being the joke of the century !!!) and if it wasn't for the fact we're sitting in good times at the moment, at a guess I'd say 30% of small businesses would fold. On the other hand I agree there are some who can't fight for themselves, and that's where unions have a role to play...

Old mate has lost his job and come here for advice, we don't need the usual rubbish causing it to be closed.

Good luck with finding a new job bud, will try to keep this open for you, even if it means a little holiday for the next one who disregards DK's warning in post #24.

I hope that you find another job soon and at a decent rate of pay,
my work has of 2 weeks ago made me full time perm, NOT HAPPY!!!! I have gone from $21.00 per hour ($798.00, 38 hours) down to $17.20 ($653.00, 38 hours) total loss of $145.00 per week, It's only been 2 weeks and we are feeling the pinch already. may have to look elsewhere.

I dont know if rules have changed over the years for the following. But - basicaly you have been retrenched , not sacked ! / which happened to myself over 16 years ago during the second year of my fitting and turning apprentiship (company closed down / due to no work). But back then the company had to find another place/company/job for me to continue my apprentiship by law / which they did.
Talk to the teachers at your tradeschool about it , they will be able to inform you of what you can do , or what you are entitled to. cheers.

Old Mate... When you get your ticket (sparky) there will be many doors that open for you. We are desperate for sparkies where I work. There are packages of 140K on offer. But you gotta be qualified.

Good luck to you with what ever you end up doing.

As an alternative, I can give you some awesome recipies to eat well for pretty much no money :P

Heh, I know how you feel in the wage department. I work as a cleaner for very little money where I am now, for the simple reason of, I dont fall under the work choices regs (More than 100 people in the company). For quite some time, that was my only source of income. Earning sub $250 p/w blows chunks. Luckily enough I also work in aged care during the day (Personal Care Worker by day Cleaner by night), or else I would be crashing at mates places and eating old pizza boxes.

Best of luck mate, for you and your family. Theres nothing worse than the feeling of having no where to go with no prospects, but as everyone else has said; Keep your head up. We all feel for you.

100k packages are like big carrots though, i can tell you.
To be quite honest with you sometimes the women have to tow the line as well. If you have bills to pay maybe working up in the mines for 6-12months to put your life back on track is not a bad thing. plus earn some serious cash while your at it.

Good luck with it though.

Update: got a job with a small company based in Sydney and Fiji who are setting up in Brisbane. While I am still an apprentice I will also be trained up to eventually run the operations here. More $$$ too, plus van, phone, laptop etc.

Im nervous because they have only been here for 3 months and dont have a office as yet but they have full support from Head Office and already have too much work to handle. It's pretty specialised work, setting up massive UPS and battery systems for big buildings, banks, and telsta phone exchanges. They are also involved with wind turbine generators and, most importantly, solar power systems.

Thanks for all the info and support from here, it's greatly appreciated

That logic works for about the first millisecond... business without workers is not a business... it's an empty shed. There's no way workchoices will sack everyone, leave all unemployed and underpaid because without competent employees and demand for work, a company simply can't exist. There's plenty of work (record low unemployment) and low numbers of skilled workers, so the overall message is that now there should be a bidding war on skilled labour from employers desperate to employ good people.

Congrats on the job by the way! I know a number of people who ended up with much better jobs from scenarios like this so it's good to show that the world isn't a bad place after all!
