I would look at a custom unit at that price.

My girdle was $86 and was a custom forged unit.

Any capable machine shop should be able to knock 1 out if you give them the design.

Hey guys, it's been a while!.

Got some photos to share. Not much has been done on the motor of late. Been finishing off some small modifications to the car, nothing major, just small irritating issues that needed to be finished off, re trimmed some of the boot install, the bit behind the veiwing window due to some damage ( too close to the rear suspension and was rubbing) and installed an alarm as well as converting to a 12V PS2.
Thought i'd post some photos of some of the new gear! :

OK, new oil pump, its a mellings high volume, internaly deburred and matched to the block. It has a custom pick up for the shallow sump.

I have an ARP oil pump drive shaft.

This is the new crank shaft, it is a 3.5" stroke 4MA. its been crack tested, and ground 10/10.

It has also been double keyed. This is to take the strain of that 6/71 hanging off the end.

Close up of journals and radius, crank was ground all over to clean up any casting flash, ( i had the time so what the hey??)

Some may scoff at the stock cast crank, but when was the last time you seen a clevo crank in half??. Its not a stroker, dont need the extra metal, so I think it will be fine. Also keeping revs on check (6500 max. )
The crank is not balanced yet as I havent got pistons, flywheel and clutch. The motor will be externally balanced as per original.

OK, this is the balancer im using, its a powerbond, with 28 oz weighted. Race version, with approval card. Will need broaching for the extra keyway in the crank.

New rods, first time ive had a motor with a decent rod in it! 5.78" center to center, H- beam, everyones got 'em, but im still exited!

.

Using Crane cams Valve train, the rockers are the stock 1.73 ratio race series and matching ARP 7/16' screw in studs

Studs.

These are the lifters, Crane Cams solid roller lifters. Bit fuzzy.

And solid roller cam. Custom grind by Cam tech. They supplied the cam, lifters, roller rockers and drive gear for the dizzy.

I would recomend Cam tech to anyone, I spent about 2 or 3 hours with them talking motors and possibilities. In the end I had them supply the above for a good price ( as aposed to individual prices, saved about 12%). The other advantage is that they are ford guys and know other products too, one guy used to be the Sydney distributor for AFD heads, which im using. They spoke to Dave at AFD and organised the valve spring pakage to go with the cam for me, cuts out the middle man, and I know its all matched perfectly. which brings me to.........

The heads. These are AFD 4 V heads in Aluminium.

4V port , no porting exept for a good bowl job, performed at AFD by Dave himself, also highly reccomended supplier, really helped out.

Valve springs to suit cam, collets, retainers, guides, and valves were brought as a package

Stainless valves and custom combustion chambers, now out to 75cc to lower compression. As seen from bottom of bore. ( is this what the fuel/air mix see's before the big bang??!!)

Also have got, new welsch plugs, head studs, flywheel bolts and a few other bits.

Thats about it for the moment, still need heaps of parts, pistons, rings, timing chain, valve guides, pushrods, flywheel, clutch, ect.
And of course hours of balancing, machining, trial fitting, and checking. Also need to finalise a few things, mainstuds, girdle, rocker girdle, sump, external oil feed to rear of motor.

Catch ya later... :

Hey Peachy!
Umm. Yes and no. I do run an engine oil cooler, but those fittings at to connect the pump body with the pick up. Couldnt use the original steel pipe cause of the modified sump see. here's a better photo taken at mock up. Crude but works a treat. flat plate to main cap keeps pickup 10 to 13 mm from bottom of pan.

I run a 10 row serc bar and plate oil cooler with dash 10 hoses, this is mounted behind the number plate opening in the front bar. it also has a external oil filter.

Hope this helps.

Gary

Quick update. The new motor has come to a halt, lack of funds to finish it at this stage. So weve just got a stocker to put in the car for the moment. ive got to move house soon and dont like the thought of pushing the car up the drive way to the road. Thanks to Paul from the 72-78 ford V8 club for the motor!!!
This will be cleaned up and painted, pulleys on the blower swapped out for lower boost and then re concentrate on the new motor again.

Cheers.

What a shame that you couldn't have her at the All Fords Day- good to see you down there even without the beast though!
I am really impressed- not just a show standard car but the fact that you do most of the work yourself is outstanding.....god, have I got a lot to learn!

I'll keep a close eye on this thread now......good luck with it!

Cheers, Jamie

Hi guys (and girls)
We put in the "new" motor this weekend just gone. When I say new, its rebuilt but is near stock. This is to get the car running again, it has been 12 months allready. The good motor is still in the pipe line, and will be finished off in the new year.
here are a few shots.

look carful, im in the shot!

My brother Deane, helping out.

and again.

Youll notice that Fatass isnt there. All talk....

By the end of the week, she'll be running again after i change a relay for the starter ( hope thats the issue!), got power, just wont turn over. Anyways no biggy. post more photos latter after a bit of a clean up and she's running : : :

Redo ing some paint work on the suspension, redoing some trim in the boot, paint this, polish that. you know fiddly stuff you put off. which reminds me has anyone got a spare clip that hold the secondary arm on the drivers side wiper? mine has gone ( dunno how or where or when). PM me..
