Default Is it possible to play .mpg and .avi video files on a mobile phone?

I know there are probably dedicated places for this sort of information, I thought I'd give it a stab here!

I just got myself a new phone, a Sony Ericcson K800i. While it does have video playback, it only plays mp4 video files. I'm wondering if it's possible to add a program to the phone to play other file extensions such as the more common .mpg or .avi?

Alternatively, is it possible to convert files that I already have in .avi and .mpg into MP4 files so I can play them on the phone?

Thanks in advance!

Justin.
