I hope this puts you off tats in 3rd world countries!!

Since its the holiday season now i'm guessing quite a few are heading out and abroad. Just a bit of a warning for those who might get a tattoo or 2.

Quote:

Overseas travellers are being warned to take care after a West Australian contracted HIV after getting a tattoo in Bali.
The WA Health Department has issued an urgent warning advising Australians to avoid getting tattoos and piercings overseas.
Anyone who has recently had body art done in Bali is being advised to see their doctor.
HIV is transmitted through exchange of bodily fluids. There is no vaccine or cure.

Be careful out there! The savings in $$ is not worth it!

Funny this came up, I'm on my way to Vietnam and was planning a full back tattoo! Any precautions I should take?

I'd say the best precaution would be, don't.

Just enjoy your holiday, and then look at getting it done when you come back home. That would also mean not having to worry about the after care while you're away as well.

Why the hell would anyone get a tattoo done in a country like Bali? I don't know why people even go to Bali but that's another story. This guy paid the ultimate price for stupidity.

Only the extremely naive would get any sort of medical or cosmetic proceedure done in a third world country.

not very much info in the article?

for aruments sake the infection could have been spread a number of ways, with the tattoo being the least embarrassing thing to blame it on.........

That US site is bad but there's a place that's in aus, called Black Rose Ink tattoo in NT...they're a bunch of kids and they don't mind tattooing underage people. And they're TERRIBLE! much worse than the US mob linked above.

Regular WA Health Dept warning at this time of year. There are many Aussie run tattoo business in Bali and many have autoclaves to sterilise, something a lot of shops in Oz don't, many still use only alcohol based sterilants. Like any tattoo joint, check the work and speak to people. A mate in the Army got hepatitis from a tattoo done in Adelaide.
Any body art or piercing place can pass on blood borne diseases. Have a look at the number of parlours closed in Australia on 2010/2011 about twenty due to blood borne infections.

It's a risk no matter where you go. But the risk may be higher in another part of the world.

I don't agree. Oddly, places like Malaysia often have better health than in Australia in certain conditions.

Like any place, it's always advisable to do your homework on a potential medical centre before going ahead with it. Plenty of botched cosmetic surgery from QLD for instance.

I got one done in Thailand. And I've got to say the place was 5x cleaner than any Australian tattoo joint that I've had stuff done in. The Thai bloke made a point about showing me all his needles still in in opened packets and that his gun in the sterilizer before I even had a chance to ask to see it.

The trouble being that most young people who go to Bali and other Indonesian countries do it for one reason: to party themselves half unconscious and do stupid things. One of those stupid things could well be stumbling into a tattoo parlour and not caring what the precautions they take are. Not to mention that the big difference in Oz is that if you turn up drunk to most tattoo parlours, they refuse to work on you...I somehow doubt that such a precaution would be taken in most parlours in those parts of the world...

true, there is good and bad everywhere. sure the standards in australia should be very high, but there are no doubt many operators in third world countries that have pride in what they do. the trouble is finding them, and finding them when drunk is not very easy

if i was going to get a tattoo, i doubt i would look outside australia. i have done alot of homework previously when considering getting one, and unless i had a very good recommendation from someone, i seriously doubt i would look overseas

let's not forget this unfortunate tattoo. it should have been his dream art, and because of language difficulty, it turned out wrong. not only having "right arm" and "left arm" tattooed on his respective arms, but they may as well put a rainbow with the other clanger. it seems he drew it all out on paper, so it could not go wrong, but how wrong it went

Meh, the same thing could happen in some of the lower-end shops in Australia. **** happens, I'm still gonna get my new ones in Thailand.

Just about everyone I know who has had tatts done in Australia, have been drunk at some stage, some even going to the studio with a bourbon in their hand and got tatts done, never known any studio to knock back business.

Unfortunately I agree. And I am assuming that everyone who has comented on this thread has had at least 1 tattoo. So they would know that getting a tattoo when you've been drinking is a bad idea. Not only because of your decision making ability but also because alcohol thins out your blood, so when the needle goes in you bleed a lot more than normal.

Perhaps there may be more to this story than the "victim" is letting on. But hey, how else could you catch aids in bali, right?

There's a reason the Jetstar flights to Kuta are called the Bogan Bus.
