Govt to build national broadband network

The federal government will establish its own company to build the national broadband network.

HOW MANY JOB WILL THIS CREATE?

4Vman 07-04-2009 10:33 AM

Bizarre...... I wonder how cost effective and "efficient" it will be?? jobs for the boys?

Gabbs 07-04-2009 10:36 AM

It's about bloody time mind you I'm on iinet so my speeds are pretty good compared to some people out there.

Mark351 07-04-2009 10:53 AM

It'll take twice as long as they quoted and cost 3 times as much for only 50 times the current speed, given the government is building it. After spending billions they'll privatise it, at a loss, to raise cash because the deficit the government is creating to fund handouts, etc.

4000 managers, 3000 OHP inspectors, 2000 union liason officers, 1000 inter group liason officers and a guy from New Zealand who is over here backpacking to actually dig the trench.

It is important to note that the actual optical cable colour and shape is currently under review. A committe has been formed to appoint sub committes to assess the impacts of various colours and shapes on the worms and bugs that will live in the trenches after they have been returned to their natural state.

Both of these groups are waiting for the committee for cultural impact to review the reports from the sub comittees currently interviewing minority groups to ensure that there will be no offence given to any ancient dieties or interference to mardi-gras preperations.

"The new network will be 100 times faster than the current one which it is hoped with compensate for it costing 100 times as nuch and taking 100 times as long to be connected".

michael_ozzie 07-04-2009 11:03 AM

I have been on dial up for the last 5 years, with no prospect of Broadband, due to a twisted pair connection to the node.

So unless Telstra (or any other Telco) stands up and replaces the connection to my house with proper copper cabling, then the entire exercise is a waste of my hard earned moolah.

4Vman 07-04-2009 11:06 AM

LOL... yes this has over budget/over time/under performing disaster written all over it.
You've got to love the Australia Post analogy.. Anyone who's delt with Australia Post as a supplier knows they are possibly the most over managed, red tape bound, indecisive, fat, under performing "monopoly" in Australia..

I sensing some hostility against Australia Post. :yelrotflm :yelrotflm

Its a great idea.... however mostly useless unless they do MAJOR! upgrades to the international gateway and the cabling out of the country... As it will create a major bottleneck at the gateway.

Sure you will see the 100mbit speeds inside australia.... but want to get info from outside..........

Work Horse 07-04-2009 12:12 PM

Unusual to see a government actually keeping an election promise. This will be a great thing and is way over due.

As to who actually builds it let's give the job to private industry, because nothing ever goes wrong there and they are always so accountable to tax payers :yelrotflm

We could get some bankers to run the project into the ground and then pay them huge bonuses for their trouble.

Maybe some of the old management of HIH are still about! They could show us how much better than government they can do things :yelrotflm

Or may be some of the old One Tell management could help. They sold a telco worth nothing for millons to some of the biggest names in private industry.

Fev 07-04-2009 12:37 PM

Onetel can do it! just dont ask them where the money's gone.

bdave351 07-04-2009 12:45 PM

Considering they are testing the Rudd Govt Censorship filter at 1mb p/s then whats the point of having a 100mb p/s network?

The 40 billion project will be bottlenecked by the 40 million filter.

4Vman 07-04-2009 12:55 PM

By the time its up and running there will only be 40 sites we're allowed to view anyway.....
It will be cheaper to just send everyone a CD with the total viewable web content already on it!

At the moment we only have in total around ~7 gigabit of bandwidth with the outside world. 7000 people download at the full 100mbit and that's it.

vztrt 07-04-2009 01:13 PM

If the government was to actually get this thing done on time an budget then good on em.....it would be a first.

In reality it'll be a big stuff up.

The filter blocks 1300 sites, it does not attempt to filter the entire network. But lets not let the facts get in the way of anything.

Another Myki... ?

KITBAG 07-04-2009 01:42 PM

I hope the government pursues all the
hardware and gear from an
AUSTRALIAN MADE and OWNED COMPANY………
Not some foreigner mob….. :nana:

balthazarr 07-04-2009 01:47 PM

What's the point of more speed? With our crappy quotas, your connection will be shaped even sooner.

Unless they're planning to abolish quotas, I don't really see the point. And, as other's have said - we'd need major upgrades to our international connections to see any real benefit.

No, you are confusing the current blacklist system - which doesn't actually block anything, merely prevents Australian sites from linking to the 1,300 or so blacklisted URLS - with the proposed censo- sorry, filtering scheme. The proposed filter will attempt to block ALL material that has been refused classification.

Nice idea, but which company makes switching/networking/optical gear in Australia, let alone being owned by Aussies?

Those quota's are needed by ISP's due to the high price of needing to use Telstra's infrastructure as well as the high price of transferring data overseas. Currently there is a duopoly for international links out of Australia, but a third one is about to come online which promises to offer larger bandwidth and transfer for cheaper. http://www.pipeinternational.com/

Sorry mate but ALL traffic for http will have to go thru the filter at the compulsory level of filter and the more g rated opt-out internet is on top of that one too.

So lets not get our facts wrong :hi5:

Only thing I can think of would be the actual fibre cable itself.

The only real Australian company that does networking stuff is Netcomm, but there stuff is just rebadged. Eg Netcomm NB5800W is a Linksys WAG54G, Netcomm NB6PLUS4W is a Dynalink 1025W.

There's also the power cable, boxes and circuit breakers.

Correct and there are a few companies so they can tender for the gear so it wont be a 'job for the boys' as 4v man says.

But I wonder how will they go about doing this? Tender different companies or bring in people for the full project.

Confusion, what are you on about?

The material that has been refused classification is on the "black list".

But there are many many web sites that have no classification, there wouldn't be enough time to actually classify them
