It's 12 months since my best mate left us so today we went down to Brissy to spend the day with his widow and daughters.
We spent the whole day telling stories about him and our antics when we were younger. I don't think any of us has laughed so much in the last year.

partners car is back from the detailer looking better than new.

my car should be done next weekend and I'm expecting a massive improvement from how it looks now.

Also finally getting my gardens sorted after 5 or 6 years in the house - it would have been done today but bunnings ran out of plants and I ran out of funding lol

…One of my car batteries failed on the tester today, DIN55H now at only 64% of nominal 530 CCA. Starts and runs the car fine, but you wouldn’t rely on it after a couple of days not using.

I’m feeling good because it’s lasted almost exactly six years. It’s some obscure Turkish brand that I got from an iffy place which since closed down. At the time of purchase I thought the sellers were having a lend of me on price ($270 IIRC) but it’s proven decent value over time.

Reminds me of a number of years ago. Walked into a battery place and asked for a battery for a 2012 fg ecoboost. The bloke went out the back and bought out a blank then asked what brand i would like. I said century. Then he went to the roll of stickers and slapped one on. I should have said something oddball...

Got some new ones from Rare Spares, fit perfectly, no more sloppy shifter.

Re: What made you feel good today?

Guy moved in around the corner from me about 12 months ago. By absolute chance, we worked out that he worked at Ford with my cousin.

He moved to town working for an international company that was working on converting rubbish trucks to run on hydrogen. These trucks would be used in a project that would convert waste to hydrogen.

He was told last week that funding for the project had been exhausted and that his services would no longer be required. The same day, he was told by the real estate agent that the house he is renting will be going on the market for sale.

A member in here is a supervisor at a local veggie farm. Contacted to see if he needed anyone. Guy around the corner grew up on a farm and has experience driving tractors, so thought it might be a win:win.

Guy around the corner went out there today and now has three days per week of work, which will at least cover his rent.

Whilst he didn't exactly thank me, it feels good knowing that I've helped him out a little.

I probably didn't express that as well as I could have. We talked about the fact that he had got some employment and how it had all gone down. Whilst he never actually said thank you or expressed his thanks for me putting him on to this lead, I could tell, from the conversation, that he was thankful.

And whilst he didn't actually say thanks, it would have been easy to do. But I didn't need the 'thanks' for me to feel good about doing a good deed. At the end of the day, all I did was send a text. The guy who gave him the job was the one who is doing most of the effort.

Im deffinately no expert, all i learnt over time is if you keep on top of it, as in not let it go too long, its easy. Takes no time flat running over grass that just needs the top taken off. Takes ages when its a foot tall and when done looks ****. Also basic maintenance on gardening equipment is also advantageous. Simple stuff like changing out the blunt blades on the mower. Cheap and easy.

Do you know which mustang it was, RW?

An ex-Raaf pilot my dad flew back seat with when going away with the Roulettes (back in the days when they flew Macchis) owns a Mustang (and a Sabre and a C47).

There's nothing like the sound of a wound up Merlin, IMHO!

Shouldn't that be in the "Geez, I hate that!" thread? I would've thought that stone supplies would be pretty crucial to your line of work :lol

Are you at home, RW? Rain doesn't look like it will be much of an issue that way over the weekend.

Nah, staying 130km away atm, stone supply is crucial, only if I go and get it myself.

Are you suggesting I work on a Saturday, Sunday ? :fish Did that over Easter.

Rain means not being able to enter the quarry pit to hand select it.

Re: What made you feel good today?

Found out today that the young fellow at work who I have mentored for the last 4 years, has landed a great job, not only earning lots more money than he was getting, but also with many more avenues to work his way up the ladder than we could offer him at my work. For him to go further where I work would need one of 2 people to either die, or retire. As both of them are under 50, and quite fit, he’d be waiting a long time.

He was upfront with me when we came back to work in January, about wanting to find a better job with more opportunities, and I told him to go for it. Over the past few months I’ve helped him with his resume, and interview practice. Not that he needed much - he’s an intelligent guy.

I knew the time was close when I did a phone reference for him last week. A few days later he asked me to read the employment contract they offered him. We got a few things changed to make it fairer for him, and both parties were happy.

Today he came to me and asked for help in writing his first ever resignation letter. It was bittersweet. Great for him as a person, but he’ll leave big shoes to fill.

The joy on his face was amazing. It was then that I reflected on the people in my past, who mentored me when I was his age, and encouraged me to get to where I am today. I’m still friends with them today - those who are still alive - and most have retired now. I hope we’re still in touch when I get to retirement age.

It felt damn good to be a key part of his growth over the last few years, and point him on the pathway to new challenges.
