BE ALERT... IT IS HAPPENING...
People are being targeted by a mobile phone call back scam. I Have received a missed call from a Sydney No. I called it from the work landline, and it was some dating service crap.
The scammers* call the mobile then hang up before it is answered. The
scammer then relies on the curiosity of the phone owner to call the
number back to find out who was calling. If the number is called a recorded
message tells the caller that they have won a prize and/or they are
directed to phone a 1902 number which has a call rate of around $3 per
minute. Numbers that have been identified as belonging to these phone
scammers include:
02 8404 2207
02 8404 2235
02 8404 2215
02 8404 2296
02 8404 2216
02 8219 0500

02 8303 8320

03 8102 9565

03 8558 0556

03 8558 1441

03 8558 1442

03 8558 1443

03 8558 1444

03 8558 1445

03 8558 1446

03 8558 1447

03 9540 2950

03 9540 5101

03 9540 5189

If you receive a call from one of these numbers do not call back.
There is no prize, just a hefty bill.

If someone calls you and you're not available chances are they'll leave
a message saying who they are and why they're calling.
* apparently the scammers are actually a registered Australian
marketing company & are not doing anything illegal so there is nothing the ACCC can do to stop them.

Yep, me and all my mates have had heaps of calls from the victorian numbers, I just ignore it. As if its not bad enough dealing with Indian call centres, now there's these pricks.

I don't get it. Why reply to a number which you don't know? I personally naver call back anyone who's number does not correspond with one from my list of phone numbers. If the other person really wants to get in contact with me, they can try again later.

Fake call scam hits phones
Craig Binnie
20th May 2006
http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/com...55E662,00.html
A MISSED call scam is costing unsuspecting mobile phone users a small fortune, but regulators are refusing to stop it.

The scam begins with an automatic phone dialler generating calls to thousands of random mobile phone numbers that disconnect as soon as the phone starts to ring.
Phone owners are left with what they think is a legitimate missed call.

But callers who ring the numbers are greeted by a recorded message that says they have won a $40 prize but need to call a 190 number to collect it.

The catch is calls to the number are charged at $2.97 a minute and mobile calls cost even more.

Victims incur phone charges of about $15 to find out the prize is free ring tones that they must later cancel if they do not want to incur an additional $4-a-week fee.

The Telephone Information Services Standards Council's arbitrator, Una Lawrence, said the 190 number complied with its code of practice so would not be shut down.

Strange I have had 2 of these SMS's on my mobiles 1 on my personal and 1 on my work mobile all within 2 days of each other
It goes some thing like
Hi it is ****** (insert girls names had 2 different names with the same reply number and speel) remember me from last month and I am just touching base to see how you are Please reply so we can meet up again and it is from a 199 SMS number not a proper mobile number
I have been told the second you reply they will bombard you with spam that costs YOU up to $4 per message they send and because you have replied you have given your consent to have the message sent to you.
And no I did not reply - toooooo shonkey for this boy.

my wife got a email message today from their "big boss" warning them of the scam. If this has been warned to a govt dept with 10,000 staff then they're taking it pretty seriously.

I've had a few calls like that ages ago, but never called them back.

Recently I had someone call from a private number twice over 2 days, and hang up as soon as I answered it.

I dont know if this is the same scam, but I keep getting calls on my home phone where they hang up *** soon as you answer it, so you call back the number on the call display, and get suckered in the same. I just dont answer it unless I know the number.

I have tried a "Grey Pages" Search (It is a Handy link too)
http://mazzanet.id.au/greypages.php
You search for details via the Phone number, not a name.... And nothing has come up for many of those numbers.
Must be unlisted private numbers I reckon. As My Girlfriends parents have a silent number and their info could not be found.
