6 month regos available in NSW from 1 November

For all you NSW people out there, from 1 November 2008 many people will have the option of 6 month rego’s:

Short Term Registration options are now available on most light vehicles for renewals due from 1 November 2008.
To qualify, customers must renew their registration at myRTA.com, or via the Interactive Voice Response system on 1300 360 782.
The options include 6 months registration on cars and light vehicles, and 3 months on trailers. To take advantage of short term rego, your CTP insurance policy (or green slip) and registration period must match. Both the green slip and an e-Safety Check (formerly known as a pink slip) must be received by the RTA electronically before short term registration can be processed.

For most people paying 1 year rego, coupled with greenslip requirements, car rego is the single biggest expenditure item in the household budget, and in my view probably one of the reasons for people driving unrego cars. I hope that being able to pay 6 monthly makes it easier for people to register their cars and balance the family budget a bit easier. Even now having to stump up the best part of a grand takes a bit of saving, and years ago was almost impossible for me.

There is also a greenslip comparison tool at www.greenslips.nsw.gov.au that gives you a quote for all 7 NSW greenslip insurers. Saves time by you having to only input your details once and you get the prices for all 7 CTP’s in one hit. Then go with the cheapest if price is what matters. My car insurer’s greenslip is the 2nd most expensive, despite the car being insured with them – so it pays to use this to make sure you get the best deal. This site gives the 12 and 6 month greenslip prices. 6 month seems to be a bit more expensive that half the 12 month rate. Eg, 12 month policy $420, 6 month policy $225 etc.

we do have the option of 6 month rego but only if you are on benifits like unemployment here in vic

The South Australian option of 3 months rego is the best idea i have ever heard. That would make it so much easier for people.

QLD has had that option for ages! It's alot better IMO incase your unable to afford the 12months.

cheapest green slip you will get is about $330 bucks.

my rego is best part of 500 cause of personalised plates. its normally about 350.


so youve got $680 in rego and greenslip.

but you gotta pay to get a roadworthy, plus whatever needs fixing on your car, another 200 bucks or so.

it creeps up to a grand pretty quickly if you arent careful!



especially if you are a young bloke, where you greenslip will be around 600 or higher. im lucky and only pay 330 odd, which is cheap for a 21 year old. when i first got my licence, my greenslip was 671.

What do you mean by a greenslip?

Sorry to high jack the thread but im from W.A. and we dont have green slips or roadworthys, so im curious.

How fussy are they with the roadworthys? How do you get away with modified exhausts and big rims e.t.c.???

Yeah, it's all foreign to us in W.A, where radar detectors are fairly widespread in use, no roadworthys, and don't lose your licence till over 45km/hr. We get it fairly good I think in comparison.

We also get 6 or 12 month option for registration.

Green slip is third party insurance cover for personal injury and the like. It's different to third party property which only covers damage to cars, buildings etc.

Roadworthy - or pink slip - is an inspection of the car to make sure it's in good nick. We have to do that annually once the car is more than three years old

So for me, green slip is $334, pink slip is $31 and from memory rego last time was $254. All up $619 for 12 months.

City rego prices are even higher because of greenslip prices.

I am on a cheaper rate than most others I know with a greenslip of $420, rego of about $380, + pink slip of about $35. Total $835 - for a car that does about 5K a year (Fairlane). That's about 17cents a kilometre in rego fees alone. My younger brother's greenslips are around 600-700 each PLUS rego fees.

Not sure about Mini and Subie though as I don't pay the rego on those directly. Greenslip would be about the same but rego fees less because of lighter vehicle mass.

Uncleraggy, pink slip inspections now kick in after 5 years for new cars, instead of 3. Only recently changed.

Sounds good to me about time just need them to organise the greenslip as they do in Qld. Also discounted rego for modified older vehilces something like the hotrod rego. would be great as they are used on the road less.

This is good news for me because I have a car that has its renewal on the 4th of January. That means every year I have to try and fit in with a mechanic for a pink slip and any repairs that need doing right when they are at their busiest not to mention the cost of Christmas at the same time!

That's the best news I've heard all year, I've got 1 car rego & comprehensive insurance due 12th December & 1 car rego due 22nd December, then Christmas & 2nd cars comprehensive insurance 10th January.
