Default New Clutch - Recomendations...

Hi all.

Decided that its time to replace the clutch. The current one is absolutely buggered.

So I need some idea's.

At the moment I have two basic options:

1. A std sort of heavy duty clutch - i'm not quite sure how long that may last?

2. Brass Button - never had any experience with them, but from what i've heard, can put up with a bit more punishment?

So what does everyone think. Its going into my xr8, specs in signature below.

I'm leaning towards just the heavy duty style, but am not quite sure???

Thoughts?

I've used the Mal Wood organic clutch in both my XR8's now and would recommend them.

Unsure of the rating in them, however my mate has a blown AU with the same clutch and holds the power without a problem.

I'm going for my third clutch next Monday, my last clutch was Xtreme HD with organic disc and have no complaints. This time I'm going Exedy HD with organic.

I would stay away from brass button unless you supercharge or stroke your car.

Just got off the phone to the clutch place.

They have quotes me for two options

$985 - For the Exedy (sp?) Heavy duty clutch, including new spigot bearing and rear main oil seal

Or $1170 - for the Exedy Cussioned brass button - he seems to think its not as on / off as a typical brass button and maybe be better for my application. + spigot bearing and rear main

How do these options sound? Weigh up?

I do intend on going a fair bit further with my car mod wise, and he seems to think at the current power level, the heavy duty one would be fine. But he did warn me that because i'm pursuing the occasional track day and intend on getting more power, that maybe the couple of hundred extra might be well spent?

CraigAU3220 - How much power are you putting out? and how well has the std hd clutch lasted? You mentioned your 3rd clutch????

I'd go with the malwood option mate, seem to handle a fair bit of punishment with no negatives to the driving experience.

Check with Race Brakes Sydney (Site Sponser) if you go Exedy, they quoted me around $800 for Cushioned Button Exedy (A few months ago though, prices may have changed now)

EDIT: A heavy duty "Roller" spigot bearing is like $7 from Coventry's

James, My car puts out 212rwkw.

When i bought my car it had 40,000km on it and then i started going to the motorplex fairly regular so the std clutch probably was good for roughly 80 to 100 runs. I only replaced it because it lost its sweet spot at the drags but was still fine for the street.
The extreme clutch that's in there now has lasted about a year and a half but has done 100 runs easy, it to is still fine for the street but no good for the drags any more,eg; on launch the pedal hangs close to the floor and only recovers just before its time to look for second. also effects 1/4 mile times.
I don't think the problem is the organic disc i reckon its the pressure plate.

PS, shop around mine cost me $620 supply only. Part # FMK-6973HD

Depends on how much track time it will see. I've got an Exedy Heavy Duty in my daily driven XR8 347 stroker and it handles anything I give to it on the street and still feels like a standard clutch to drive.

ok then so, does everyone think $985 - for the HD supplied / fitted and replacing the rear main is a good price?

ive got an xtreme heavy duty, and i did smash my t5z and the clutch never slipped.

i have never had an xtreme heavy duty slip.

i found that when i got my xtreme clutch put in the clutch felt lighter to engage, and it was only the grab point that was different.

Im running an Xtreme Xtra Heavy duty dampened cushion button clutch for an XR6T behind the 6 speed, I give it a fair bit of stick and its been a great clutch but the AU isnt a daily. How ever using such clutch in a daily driven car I wouldnt recomend nor if you did a fair bit of city or heavy traffic driving. With this clutch you need to give a bit of hard time to make it easy to drive also running a lightened flywheel.

Hey, James.

Just had my Exedy HD clutch fitted today and must say the pedal feel is much lighter than the Extreme clutch that was previously in there.

Regards, Craig.

Cheers people. I have the car booked in thursday to replace the clutch. Just gonna go for the Exedy HD. Hopefully it'll be up to the task, but from what everyone has said here, I don't think there will be any drama's. Thanks all. :-)

Yeah mate, got it put in yesterday. No drama's at all $985 and they had my car for 5 hours or so.

Only problem is... I gotta learn how to drive my car all over again lol. This clutch is so sensitive, it's hard to drive smoothly. I suppose it'll take a couple of days to get used to it, and a few days for it wear in a little bit.

The pickup point is like 2mm above the floor. The second you lift your toes, your off and away, no slipping.

I can see myself liking it... the gearbox on the other hand is not going to agree with me I think.

But yeah well worth the money.

James, James, James.....

What you NEED to do is what I'm going to do. Destroy your box. That's right DESTROY it, make it go BANG.

That way you have an excuse to go for a T56, get a reco one from a commodore (they're a LOT cheaper) along with a custom bellhousing and cross member from either Dellow or Mal Wood and you are laughing.
