Default Mk I Escort engine options

I've found a lonely little mkI esky, pretty sure I won't be able to help myself and I'll probably buy it. I'm wondering what my options are in QLD for an engine conversion?
I'll admit I don't even know what is in it yet! I'll find out next time I head out bush, there's no rush - it's been sitting where it is for a few years now. It seems to have a pretty straight, rust free body which is all I care about.
So if you have a favourite or dream motor or even a dream setup for a mkI feel free to share! I'm all ears...
Cheers,
Tim.

p.s. It had white(ish) paint and what I think were green stripes, over the bonnet and roof and/or down the doors. (Hey it was dark and I was only vaguely interested at the time!) Was this a factory option or did it denote a particular model? Maybe someone just had bad taste... ;) it isn't that bad, but I'd only copy it if it was original.

Thanks Rob,
A mate was talking about a Transit van 2L DOHC with EFI that isn't too hard to fit.
Cheers for the info,
Tim.

Bodge - you will never get a straight answer on engine swaps as there will be the people who say stay with a ford power plant and others who will go for a jap motor

if you can & you can get it to work a Transit van 2L DOHC with EFI sounds a good options - at the end of the day, what ever you feel you want to put the time & effort into is the way to go
