"All this talk of Trabants is inspiring stuff. It reminds me of the heady days of Sputnik and Yuri Gagarin when the world trembled at the sound of our rockets. 714 new cases for Australia and 15 deaths sees the CMR rise to 1.270% and active cases rise to 8,398. NSW recorded 12; WA & Queensland recorded 1 each with the balance in Victoria. Thanks to the timing differences, it wasn't the highest daily new cases number although it was the largest single day death toll and Victoria also passed the previous daily high for new cases.

2 new cases and no deaths for NZ so CMR is 1.402% and active cases rise to 24.

The UK recorded 891 new cases and 65 deaths yesterday so the CMR drops to 15.093%.

Just over 54k new cases in the USA yesterday and 1,362 deaths sees CMR down to 3.259% and active cases at 46.3% with the raw numbers rising again. Note that the USA is actually minus one day due to time differences.

Other notable points:
The USA completes 62M, India 21M, the UK 17M and Italy 7M tests;
Both North & South America pass the 1,000 cases per 100k level;

Albania (139), Libya (251), El Salvador (439), Ukraine (1,271), Morocco (1,283) and Argentina (7,147) recorded new daily highs, those in blue for the second consecutive day and those in red for a third or more consecutive day.

W.A 1.6 million versus 6.4 Vic. S.A is 1.7.

Note W.A overseas infections, we inherited a large majority of our cases.
Unfortunately for Vic, local spreading is high and the unknown is high.
W.A is OK for now as long as we can keep isolated in our (big) little bubble.

Here's an interesting news article

Quote:
Anti-mask protesters' new weapon: wearing masks that offer no COVID-19 protection

Face masks made of mesh, crochet (yarn) or lace are now popular items being offered by online retailers.

INDIANAPOLIS — As more communities and businesses adopt mandatory mask orders, supporters of an “anti-mask” movement are looking to make a statement. They are wearing masks that cover their nose and mouth but provide no ability to slow the spread of disease.

"I wore a mask that is designed for protecting your face in a paintball battle. You can easily breathe through it. I walked all around the store, talked to employees, and other shoppers, and every one of them could see my mouth," said a Florida man who posted a video showing him wearing a mesh mask to a Tampa Walmart. "It was almost like not wearing a mask at all. Nobody cared. That's because it's not about safety. It's all about compliance."
https://www.wthr.com/article/news/in...e-860fe84e0f52

Also notice the difference in attitude and language between the BLM protesters and the anti maskers protest:

Quote:
Victorian police call protest planned for Melbourne CBD “selfish”

Victoria Police have vowed to crack down on a protest planned for Melbourne’s CBD this weekend despite the city entering stage 4 lockdown.

In a statement, police said they were aware that “some people” may be planning to attend the CBD on Sunday to participate in a protest.

“This is a completely blatant breach of the Chief Health Officer’s directions and puts Victorian lives at risk,” the statement said.

“This selfish behaviour will absolutely not be tolerated. Be assured Victoria Police will be responding and will take appropriate action.

“There will be a highly visible presence in and around the city to ensure the community is complying with Stage Four restrictions.

“We will have no hesitation in issuing $1,652 fines or making arrests on the day, if necessary.

“Police are also making inquiries into the organisers of this event and we will be holding them to account.”

WA is fortunate.

1) Perth is the literal definition of "not on the road to anywhere" Our international flights were few, limited to few cities, and mostly cater only for locals.

2) There are only two sealed roads into WA, and they are very long.

3) For the last 150 years, the only consistent government policy, from both sides, is that they blame everything on Canberra and "Over East."
So quickly closing the borders, and blaming covid on "everyone else" was an easy and popular decision.

4) McGowan is savvy enough to realise that if Covid does get in here, we will be royally screwed, and his popularity will drop faster than a Frenchman's trousers.

I feel for the police dealing with the people that dont have the health of others in mind when flouting restrictions.
I have a thought for the people that do the right thing but will be restricted because the small percentage of 'citizens' that think they know more than medical advisers.

Everyone puts **** on Americans but when you have a population of 330M you're going to proportionally have more dumbasses.

Think of India and China - they'd have a couple of Australia's worth of dumbasses just on sheer numbers.

Think of how many Indian doctors we have as well, both ends of the spectrum in big numbers.

A much lower (albeit not low enough) 446 new cases for Australia and 8 deaths sees the CMR rise to 1.282% and active cases rise to 8,694, 85% of which are in Victoria. NSW recorded 12; SA recorded 1 with the balance in Victoria.

No new cases and no deaths for NZ so CMR is 1.402% and active cases drop to 23.

The UK recorded 950 new cases and 49 deaths yesterday so the CMR drops to 15.063%.

Just over 55k new cases in the USA yesterday and 1,311 deaths sees CMR down to 3.249% and active cases at 45.7% with the raw numbers rising. Note that the USA is actually minus one day due to time differences.

Other notable points:
Global cases pass 19M although the last 1M has taken 5 days so that's a step in the right direction as the previous 1M only took 3 days;
The USA passes 5M cases today;
India passes 2M cases;
Africa passes 1M cases;
The USA completes 63M, India 22M, France 3M and Pakistan 2M tests;
Asia records a new high for daily cases with 87,022;

Senegal (177), Lebanon (255), Poland (726), Ukraine (1,318), Colombia (11,996) and India (62,170) recorded new daily highs, those in blue for the second consecutive day and those in red for a third or more consecutive day.

Are there any articles on the strategy for testing outside hot spots?

It seems so much focus is placed on hot spots (rightly so), but outside of that there seems to be an ignorant bliss that its not spreading?

If it can be tested for, and some people seem to show very minor if any symptoms then how do we know its not wider spread? Until of course its to late.

Hey Russ, do you have any stats re the % population tested versus the number of total cases? It would be interesting to correlate that data as opposed to just the raw number of cases. Obviously, the more you test, the likely you are to detect more active cases. The less you test, the less active cases you have (DT theory).

PS Thanks for continuing to share this info, it is very interesting to see the trends.

Also curious, how many are being temp checks (gun) as they go to work? We have it daily at the gate and I find it odd the local schools dont do the same?

Its hardly invasive and a good temp gun isnt that expensive. Schools could then record counts of over temps and report back? You would have to be understanding that its flu season by atleast its some kind of lead indicator.

At work (on board ship) all crew gets tested twice daily, anybody who wants to come on board during a port call gets tested before they come up the gangway.....anyone who refuses does not come on board and has to deal with the consequences of that, if an employee then they will be joining the legions of the unemployed fairly quickly.....

We've looked at the number of tests per detected case with Australia one of the highest at 233 tests per case and places like Mexico and Colombia less than 5 tests per case. The USA is at 13 and the UK at 57 but the data only really tells who is perhaps targeting their testing better.

Here is the chart for the 'focus' group of countries that I'm watching in detail and I'll see if I can get one for all of the countries. Please note that these numbers are based on ADULT population only.

It's probably pointless looking at countries that have done very little testing, so here are the 47 countries that have tested over 10% of their total population (not adult population as per the previous chart).

Two countries, Luxembourg and Monaco have tested more than 95% of their population and while that 'should' be a good indicator of what the number should be the results are so widely different (87 and 316) as to allow no realistic conclusion.

As always, there's a danger with using data without understanding the basis of that data. As you say, some countries may only be doing testing of those who show symptoms (mostly Aus) versus countries who are conducting widespread testing.

Given that Aus is (as I understand it) mostly doing testing for those who have flu like symptoms, I'm really surprised at the high number of test per positive case.

Again, thanks for doing the hard work in the background to make this data available.

Yep we've had it for a couple of months now. With stage 4 we also need country head approval.
Just before stage 4 was announced, we were asked whether we preferred to spend one day collecting our personal belongings or have the cleaners pack it for us. But now, both options are off the table.
