Quite a few Kenworth components are made here in Australia. Drivetrains on the other hand are US built.

Not sure I would want a Chinese Cummins, do they even have liners in them these days.
Seems most dual cab ute diesel engines cheapen out by not installing them.

I don’t know about that,but we are really talking different types of vehicles where we have mainly domestic type use where if we get 3-400k nearly everyone is quite happy,whereas the big commercials expect to get at least a million kms before their rebuilds.Bit different price point too where a new 4 cyl ute engine is probably $ 6-8k for new whereas $50k for a bigger version

Actually, If You had an Open Minded Objective Look at them! You might Be surprised.


The Chassis is an Exact Copy of the previous generation Hilux. So all your suspension parts, lift kits ect are readily (& cheaply) available.
As for the Foton built bits read the review that Franco put a link to. (here it is again)

That ISF series engine is designed for those light trucks like the Jap ones, I'd assume it's not some cheap POS even though it comes out of China.

Has Bosch electronics, would be good to have a fiddle with I reckon.

Apart From the ISF range, the New 12 Litre X12 is Chinese Built. Pretty sure some of the B series are also built there.

I have and I wasn't.

As I said, everything is a good buy at the right price. What they're selling for in dealers is not, but if you can pick one up cheap at auction or privately then go for it.

I routinely buy dual-cabs for work. In the past I've bought entire fleets.
Once you get people out of their "..Must....Buy...Toyota.." mode, we don't care about badges, and we don't worry about resale, as they are really stuffed by the time we finish with them.

Big difference for us I suppose is that reliability and ease of repair are critical. Labour on site is extremely expensive, and down-time is also problematic. We look at a variety of options for pricing parts, and generally speaking there is a lack of support for these newer brands.
And when we look at the total cost of ownership over the life of the vehicle, they don't come out in front.

I remember back when Isuzu had just started selling the D-Max here. I was looking at a major fleet purchase for a mine near Kal. We were really impressed with the D-Max, and its pricing, but local support consisted of a used car dealer wo had been given the Isuzu franchise. He had no clue about parts support, so in the end we went with the then Ford Ranger (that was then just a rebadged Mazda)

Yes fully aware of that, was looking recently at the ISF 3.8lt JAC in the 6T range.
It looked good on paper but, Nah, with a shipping container full of spares now, I can rebuilt my Aussie/Jap Ford Traders several times over before needing one of these electronic piles of crap.
I would however be interested in buying the S cam equipped Dana front and rear axles.

SMF in India have redesigned the Trader cab/chassis and parts availability.

B series aren't road legal anymore in the West. Now sold as an industrial engine.

Brand new Great Wall dual cab.

5 year warranty.

20K drive away.

They aren't brilliant but get the basic job done and I'd rather over a 10yo outdated Ute with a million K's.

Why not take the TITANIUM PICANTO GT LINE to a shop and get them to turn it into a dual cab, probably only cost about 4-5K

Get a DMAX, from 2013 onwards. they are MUCH better than the older ones, and rodeos of the previous years. They have all the side airbags etc as standard.

Sold it privately, first person to look at it bought it, didnt even haggle and i got more than i paid for it 18mths ago, probably could have asked more tbh.

Bit of a catch 22 really, got more for the Territory due to low supply but now looking at top dollar to replace it with an equally low supply ute.
The more i think about what you get for your money in utes right now the more i like the idea of getting a dedicated weekend 4x4 for half the budget and a cheap runabout for work until supply and prices fall back inline.

I considered a crewman but as i dont want a V8 it rules out the VZ due to Alloytec rubbish and cant find a good VY example locally, plus the seats and plastics are generally flogged out in that era Commodore by now.

If you’re interested, a part-time colleague has a “tradie ready” trayback ‘99 Hilux 2WD std cab with decent motor. Small inverter, tonneau, gal toolboxes, stock body (mature owner). This would give you genuine small works ute ability and the 6x8 tray for real life items (eg, 3-seater sofa). Only shortcoming IMO is no rear rack.

A friend's brother worked for HSV. In the company, the Cross 8 was known as the Cross 3. Those 3 sitting in the back were always cross with having to be there

The Crewman were an absolute hack job, cobbled together from bit and pieces from the various Commodore bodies. The amount of shut-lines and trims covering weld points was almost hilarious. I drove one for about 5 min, that was enough, it drove worse than my agricultural PK Ranger.

They don't "buy in " those components , they build them under agreement with those companies . With new entrants to the market , one way to build acceptance is to mention few established names that supplied expertise to build major components of the vehicle.
