Default Vale Pajero

Always competent, finally a victim of the staggering corona losses its parent has suffered, it is time to say goodbye to the Pajero:

Nothing to do with Corona, as even the article states.

Been common knowledge for over a year that the current Pajero is the final one.

Hence the Pajero Sport.

Doubt capability ever an issue.

The Badge though certainly has.

Can't remember a car Mitsu ever released I'd even consider buying. (Lancer Evo included)

I had three of them, 86, 91 and 99 models. The '86 model had the manual gearbox problems, I lost two teeth from 5th gear 200km west of Roma, my now ex wife wanted it in the split after I fixed it, and it soon lost 1st and 3rd gear.

I thought it was an odd problem.

The other Paj's were great, no complaints.

A combination of factors:

1) Mitsi, like a couple of the other smaller Japanese marques, is struggling and will increasingly look to model sharing to stay competitive. Clearly just don't have the money to develop a new, stand-alone, model.

2) Mitsi had been one of the slower companies to move production offshore, so closing an unprofitable Japanese factory has driven the timing of this decision.

3) This is a market the Japs had almost to themselves for a long time, but with the Koreans, Chinese, Europeans, and even Ford and GM (LHD) pushing more into the market, it has become extremely competitive.

4) Most large 4wds were bought by families, almost exclusively for urban use. That market is now saturated with passenger-car based SUVs, that are cheaper to build and operate.

5) Those wanting genuine offroad capability, have increasingly turned to 4wd light-trucks (and their wagon derivatives). Once cramped, gutless, and uncomfortable, those have improved substantially, and are now favoured. And again there's a LOT to choose from. From Mitsi's POV it's a lot cheaper to keep developing the Triton-based "_-Sport"

Not sure about the older stuff but we nearly got a newer one if it wasnt for that 1980's third row.

National Pacific and Aurizon will have to start getting Toyota's.

My pop swore by them and had a long line of them up until he passed away... All bought brand new and never gave him a hassle.

Sad to see them go but not surprised, not really big enough to compete with LC200/Patrol and Mitsu pretty well didn't change them in the last 10 years....

Owned a few Pajero's. Awesome tourers, great value compared to Lancruisers and Patrols if using for touring and not hardcore 4x4. Very reliable, I rated mine as more reliable than any other 4x4 I owned (Patrol, Cruiser). Ultra comfortable as well. We will buy another once the Outlander that we have dies, don't know how long that will take though as only done oil changes for 220k and literally can't kill it. I really rate Mitsubishi for cheap reliable cars.

They’ve been saying that for the last 8 years, just keeps getting pushed back. Not too many advances in illegal current models life, for example is suspension in a 2000 NM Pajero will still fit in a brand new Pajero...

Im trying to find the stats but I bet it still sells better than most of Ford random line up for a "dinosaur".

https://www.caradvice.com.au/869006/...?source=plista

Although sales of the Mitsubishi Pajero in Australia are down by 36 per cent in a market that has fallen by 21 per cent year-to-date, demand surged in June – up 160 per cent versus the same month last year – as buyers embraced recreational vehicles and four-wheel-drives to holiday at home.

In 2019, Mitsubishi Australia reported 2847 Pajeros as sold versus 8490 in the year 2002.

June 2020 for Ford.

Fiesta 54
Focus 248

Mitsubishi are pretty smart actually - they drag out platforms with constant face lifts and minor updates.

People assume they are buying a new car, and they are, based on perhaps 10-15 year old architecture.

They price them very well, just under the competition that has just spent many millions on a new fangled platform.

Just read how ASX is going gangbusters. How old is that platform? How many facelifts?

That it also shares with Outlander - again, how many updates and facelifts?

The 2.2L (2.3L actually) diesel engine has not had much done to it in a while, is way under powered (compared to the competition) but awesomely efficient and reliable.

Don't get me wrong, I had an Outlander for 3 years from new and they are a brilliant car for what you get and the price.

They are probably making tons more profit per unit than the competition as the initial R&D spending has been dragged out for so long.

Probably do well with faults and model issues for the same reasons.

Had one as a hire car for a fishing trip out of Exmouth back in 2008, quite liked it. If you look at the pricing on carsales, for what you get for Pajero's 51K, it's pretty impressive.

Dazz is correct the utes and their wagons have come on and when you compare the online driveaway pricing (Pajero Sport 45ish, Fortuner 46, Prado GX 61, LC200, I saw a GXL at 102 lol, Defender 80 whaa) the ute based wagons are pretty good value - about Territory TX AWD money from 2005. MUX seems to be the reputation winner.

From CA article:

"While the writing is on the wall for the full-size Mitsubishi Pajero, the name will live on with the smaller and cheaper Mitsubishi Pajero Sport (pictured below), a heavy duty four-wheel-drive based on the Mitsubishi Triton ute."

so, the one thing kept will be the name...

Wow I'm surprised it sold so well.

I've clocked up at least 120,000kms in Pajero's since 2014.
They feel way to old for a new car, but I guess the value for money is decent assuming you negotiate something quite a bit better than RRP.

The 2018 Pajero's we have at work feel like a direct competitor for the 2007 Prado's we had back in 2009-2010. The 2020 Prado's we have absolutely destroy Pajero's in every way except acceleration rate.

The Pajero's have about 350,000kms on them and they are ready for the scrap heap. In comparison we had 2014 Prado's that still felt similar at 550,000kms

There would be quite a few people who think Dakar entrants are the same as the ones in the showroom.

You'd think Mitsubishi would be fairly profitable, but in reality they are losing money. The whole alliance tie up between Nissan, Mitsubishi and Renault is a sea of red ink.

Do I recall seeing that Mitsubishi are now withdrawing from Europe?

That was one thing we noticed with the brand new fishing trip Pajero in 2008, it did not 'feel' as solid as Prados we were familiar with, eg solidity of dash/creaks etc. That said, it was new, reliable for what it was with a good finish.

2847 = 237 per month
down 36% = 237 x 0.64 = 151
then up 160% in June = 151 x 1.6 =241 (roughly, don't know exact June 2019 number, using average)

241 per month, about 241/699 of Everest = 34% of the volume
Still pretty good for a 1999 chassis

Now if we had an AU selling currently on it's 1999 chassis...

Pajero has a monocoque construction and Prado has a ladder chassis.
To the people comparing them to the Landcruiser and Patrol, don’t because A) they also have a ladder chassis and B) it is like comparing a Ranger to a F truck. The direct comparison to the Pajero would be the Prado.
