Whoever is spreading it is still out there spreading to more. You can't contact trace and isolate the unknown. They are either asymptomatic or they are not getting tested even though they are not feeling well. Its now reported that it is linked to the NSW cluster.

Great chart, thanks

I am not convinced hat it shows the newest strain is more virulent. I certainly shows that it is taking over from the old strain. The increase in the latter months could as equally be attributed to the Winter, as the newest strain.

So, CA announces that the 3rd test will be played at the SCG, and within a couple of hours NSW announces 18 new cases with a handful of unknown transmissions. Something smells. Why not announce the numbers before the decision was made, or why not hold off on the decision until the numbers were announced? So yes, you can now go watch the the cricket with thousands of other people in a hotspot, but please "don't yell and don't cheer". This would be comical if it wasn't putting the rest of the country at risk.

Bateau Bay NSW woman sped through border checkpoint in East Gippsland, 13 hours later they caught her heading for SA.
Can not believe it took them this long to track this idiot down.

You are right, reading a few other places it seems to be more infectious but (they believe at this stage) not more damaging.

Data valid as at 00:00 GMT December 30th, 2020.

Note: As not all Australian States report at the same time, the data below is based on the previous full day reporting.

31 new cases for Australia and 1 death so the CMR is 3.203%. NSW recorded 25 cases, SA 3, Queensland and Victoria recorded 2 each.

No new cases and no deaths for NZ so CMR is 1.162% and active cases 49.

The UK had 50,023 cases yesterday and 981 deaths.

Just under 201k new cases in the USA yesterday and a new high of 3,717 deaths sees CMR rise to 1.736% and active cases at 39.0% with the raw numbers rising and now over 7.7M. Note that the USA is actually minus one day due to time differences.

Other notable points:
Global cases pass 83M, the last 1M in 1 day;
Global deaths pass 1.8M, the last 50k in 5 days;
Global deaths set a new daily high of 14,314;
Africa sets a new daily high with 30,409 new cases;
The USA passes 20M cases;
North America passes 23M cases;
The USA completes 251M, India 170M, Russia 90M, and Colombia 8M tests.

Estonia (968) - 27% above the previous high;
Latvia (1,367);
Ireland (1,718);
UAE (1,728);
Tunisia (2,414) - the previous high on October 8th;
Lebanon (2,878);
Lithuania (3,934);
Panama (4,465) - 34% above the previous high;
Czechia (16,329); and
South Africa (17,710) - 18.5% above the previous high;

... all
recorded new daily highs; those in blue for the second consecutive day and those in red for a third or more consecutive day.

I see masks are becoming compulsory indoors again from 17:00 today for all of Victoria and the size of private gatherings has been reduced to 15 from 30 both just in time for New Year's Eve.

News suggest person from the Northern Beaches (VIC's case zero) entered VIC on about the 19th of December while positive. Went to Smile Buffalo Thai restaurant in Black Rock (close to Mentone) on the 21st with family members. It spread from there.

Anyone who entered VIC from the 11th of December from the Northern Beaches were asked to get tested! Obviously this clown thought they were exempt. They have tracked this person down and he/she will be getting tested today. 13 days after they entered VIC!? All the people/places they have visited in those 13 days could potentially be an issue. Just because they didn't go and get tested as was requested by the VIC government.

Something has been on the nose about how NSW has been reporting their numbers even before this latest outbreak. The way they got to the 28 days of no community transmission was under a cloud too, with many NSW residents saying their test results came back "inconclusive", but still had to isolate for 14 days during that period.

The numbers being reported currently, as you've said, there's something smelly. Some of the locations of positive cases are not being announced!? When asked by a reporter why all locations weren't being reported, Chant replied something on the lines of for privacy reasons and they were able to locate all close contacts so no need to publicise the locations. What??

Hope everyone has a safe and festive celebration of the end to 2020 tonight.

Wishing you all the best for the year ahead with the (somewhat faint) hope that the year ahead will be better than the one that is about to come to an end.

I imagine the calls to the 15 people invited to the various NYE gatherings who no longer make the cut at such short notice will be uncomfortable.

Another VIC press update in 10min (15:30). Two in one day. What are we in for now?

Hopefully they'll have some good news that the NSW case has been put down.

It could become a blokes’ or girls’ night. Most should be fairly easy to divide. A good few people would likely offer to back out, anyway.

Looking at the locations of high risk for NSW’s recent excitement, if you stay out of pubs, clubs, gyms and Insta-worthy eateries, you’re onto a good start. Not many cases at Costco or greasy spoons.

VIC update:
  • Border to NSW fully closed as of 23:59 01/01/2021
  • 8 positive cases, all linked to the NSW cluster
  • 70+ close contacts in isolation awaiting results.

The locations now include golf courses, one in Cape Schanck, and another in country VIC, Leongatha, and a cinema in Glen Waverly.

Hard border put up now. Should have happened from the start. Seriously, even arm chair experts on ford forums could see this coming from a 1000 miles away. Its all fun and jokes until people's health start being severely affected.

Somehow I can't see house parties telling half their mates they can't come tonight in Vic. We will see the real net result in about 2 weeks time.

Drove through the city beaches just now and it is completely dead. Very few people in restaurants, bars and pubs.

Thanks Russ and admins for letting these threads run. It has provided a lot of useful information and some light entertainment during what has been a difficult time. All the best for 2021.

Noticing a big gap in theory and practice at one hospital I’m visiting family in.

Official rule: 1 designated visitor per day, they must submit to the usual rigmarole.
Practice: No problem with three visitors at once, presuming all submit to “the process”.

That said, they are officially excepting (not counting) people of any age who are not capable of self-supervision, if they come in with a “normal” visitor.

They might as well just keep the borders closed until the vaccine is rolled out if they are going to open and close them like this. Does nothing for confidence.

No way would I book interstate anywhere at the moment except maybe down the coast.

With all due respect, wtf can he do in VIC that he cant do from where he is ? working remote lessons are a positive outcome from this covid BS
Is he entitled to a holiday, he does have a lot of stuff to think about.
Why have a deputy ?
Is he out of state and bypassing covid advice ?

Maybe he would make better decisions while rested !
