Default what brand of oil for running in?

hey guys as you know im building my motor, and still not sure on what oil to use for running it in, id like to run it in for a bit longer then you usually would just to make sure its run in proply and all the crap has cleaned out of it. can anyone suggest the best brand of running in oil, and at what intervals should the oil/filter be changed during this process, price isnt a factor.

lots of people use cheap 10dollar bottles from supermarkets it's not like it's staying in there long

i prefer maded's way as you're changing it on such a regular basis, all crap left over in the motor exits quickly. thus the reason to use crap oil
then run some good stuff

Technically you should use a proper running in oil. I know Castrol, Penrite and Valvoline make one. Repco in Hoppers sell a Valvoline "running in oil".

They are basically a completely mineral based oil with no additives that allow you to get better ring seal and isn't too harsh on the new bearings in those first few km.

Really should only be in the car for a few hundred km - like 500 at the most. By this stage the engine is pretty much run in, so then dump it, change the filter and put in your favourite brand of oil, and stick to that one brand and viscosity.

thanks for the replies, i rang dave at repco and he recommended me the valvoline running in oil, and its 26 bucks, for me ;), so its pretty cheap considering! so ill run that thru twice with 350~ km's on each bottle of oil, then go to some penrite sin or somthing along the lines of that. any one got some good advice on doing a proper run in? what to do from turning the key the first time onwards?

Let the car warm up at idle.

Then take it out for a 1/2 hour thrashing... Load the engine up, put a but of strain on it to bed the rings in properly...

Ater that vary the engine speed, dont let it idle too long and drive it reasonably gently for 1500/2000km.

No more than 3/4 throttle... But say cruise along in 2nd for 30 sec and go hard 3/4 throttle... Do the same thing and 3rd and 4th... Cruise along in 5th for a bit the drop back to 3rd wait a few second then stab to 3/4 throttle. Basically what you want to is really fill the cylinders and make them work.

Last time I run in an engine, I towed a 500kg trailer around and pushed it on and off the throttle. Loaded up the engine and made it do a decent amount of work.
