Default AVI to DVD

I've got a couple of AVI files that I want to watch on my DVD player. Can someone recommend a program for doing such a task? And what programs are people using to copy DVDs?

Better yet, go and buy one of the LG DVD players that has support for PC format files including AVI, MPG, DIVX, XVID, ... etc. etc. and they also offer semi-regular updates for the ROM as well. Excellent stuff and does away with the need for messy conversions into "regular" DVD format.

I ended up burning the AVIs to a DVD (not conversion) and my Grundig DVD player recognises them fine. However, the picture doesn't fill up the whole screen unless I use the Zoom button and lose a little bit of quality.

I'll look out for Nero 7 ;)

Look out for the "VSO divx to dvd" program.
Simply click on add files, press convert and away it goes...takes about 10-15 mins to convert a 200 meg file and will even burn it straight to dvd if you want...converts AVI, XVID, DIVX in fact 99% of other file types to MPEG2(dvd format)... you can change reigon encoding(from Pal TO Ntsc and vice versa), TV format(4:3 to 16:9 and vice versa). Sorry but i think it knocks NERO for six coz the interface is much more user friendly
Very simple program to use... highly recommended!!

If your going to use Nero, which I would, use version 6 not 7. V7 is really quite annoying and 6 does everything you'd need it for.

The latest version of Nero Vision Express 3 works, but it takes a LONG time to convert from AVI to DVD format. It also has a 'debugger' program that runs in the background, that stops some games from working. You can disable this by deleting references to the program in the registry.

I got Nero bundled with my burner. You also may need to download the latest codecs for some .avi files.

Which version?

In 6 or 7, in Nero STartsmart just choose "Make your own DVD-video"

I use NeroVision Express, create a movie, drag the file in, hit next, hit burn Movie onto DVD.

Considering how much the program is doing.... you would expect it to take a while.

Previously i have left my machine running overnight to do such tasks. I have 2gig of ram, and it still takes time.

Best start one and go to sleep, when you awaken, it will be sitting there all shiney and ready to go

Thats the one I use, well actually 6.2. I havent found a reason to bother upgrading.

It is fast, and i havent been able to fault the quality. I'm sure if you got a quality buff to watch it, they would find plenty of stuff ups, but hey if it isnt blurry, doesnt freeze and still watches like a movie, its done the job.

The perfect way? I use this method to make flawless DVDs.

DVD2SVCD (in AVI2DVD mode) using the cinema craft encoder with 4 VBR passes. If the source audio is AC3, just extract it, or DVD2SVCD uses BeSweet to encode into mp2. Take the resulting video and audio files and drop them into TMPGEnc DVD Author, which does all the necessary DVD editing. I simply divvy up the video into 5 min chapters, and encode without a menu. Then use Nero to burn the authored DVD files onto a good quality disc.

Beware with some versions of Nero 6. Earlier ones have issues and reproduce unusable DVDs. I use 6.3.1.10 without dramas.

If anyone wants tips, etc, PM me.
