Default LW Focus tyre noise

I have an 18 month old diesel LW Focus Sport with 34,000kms on the clock. Recently I have noticed a rhythmic throbbing sound from the rear tyres when driving on a smooth (quiet) road surface at around 60-70kph. O took the car back to my dealer for investigation.

They confirmed the throbbing from the rear tyres, so they switched the front and rear tyres and then found the throbbing coming from the front wheels. Next they put 4 wheels from another Focus Sport on my car - no throbbing!

They inspected all four of my wheels and tyres and could see no faults.

They told me that this is the 4th Focus Sport that has been returned to them this year with the same problem. They have reported the problem to Ford, and made no charge for the investigation. They also assured me that the car is safe to continue driving.

The tyres are Michelins.

I wonder if any other LW Focus owners have had the same problem, and if so what their dealers/Ford Australia have done about it?

possible that the tyres are not properly round. Though this usually shows up straight away.

What brand of tyre are they? Have they ever been rotated? Sounds like the tyres are becoming out of round from lack of rotating them

Please read the manual carefully, as the these manufacturers spent millions of dollars making sure it is perfect.....Now why are there so many problems with my car, when I follow the instructions to the letter?....Answer, majority rules round here

Geeze! I'm only a couple thousand km's shy of where you are. Haven't noticed anything of the sort just yet. Hope I don't though!

Be sure to let us know how you get along.

Sounds like feathering of the tyre. I've had this on other cars as the tyre wears out.

This is definitely tyre feathering - can happen to any car with a reasonably low profile tyre and soft compound tread (some tyre brands are worse than others but I've had it happen to Bridgestones, Toyos, Michelins).

I've learned my lesson over a few cars - to prevent it, make sure the front and rear wheel alignment is kept exactly right (sometimes ex factoy it isn't even perfect). Find someone you trust to do it accurately and get it re done every 5,000-8,000km - this is the only way I've found to avoid this problem as once its there, only new tyres will fix it.
