Default Large Hadron Collider...about to decimate- the universe.

Dunno how many of you guys aware, but a very controversial particle accelerator is about to be switched on, with potentially universe ending results. Doubtful, but heres some good reading. I don't think anything signifigant will happen. That way, if something does.... : :

Not really anything to worry about, I did read a good article explaining it in Laymans terms, but buggered if i can find it now.

It's in its super cooling stage right now.

I did find this site.

Some awesome photos of it (56k beware)

There is a particle accelerator here in Australia, has been for a while now. The difference between the two though is significant !. The newest one which runs over the borders of Italy and France / Somewhere around there (under the ground / soon to be fired up) is based on the same principals as the particle accelerator, except this machine is built to 'smash' particles/atoms together at mega speeds from opposite directions!, not just see how fast they can accelerate them in 1 direction.
From what I gather, all the fuss seems to be that this is apparently how the universe was created so they say, and smashing particles/atoms at high speeds could cause another big bang and maybe even create a black hole or worse ...lol ! .

It already has been switched on. A few times.

And we're not dead yet.

If they really want to create a black hole, I can give them a few addresses where they can start.

Even if it does happen, we'll never know about it. It'll be like, ZIP!

Although for the sake of anything whatsoever, I don't see why they would risk doing it for something like that to happen.

Heres another article

Quote:
Geneva, Switzerland - As the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) nears completion, many people have worried about the implications of colliding subatomic particles at high velocities. Some have suggested that the device could destroy the Earth by creating black holes or dangerous subatomic particles, but a new group calling themselves People for the Ethical Treatment of Hadrons (PETH) are worried about the health of the subatomic particles.
Quote:
"You've got these subatomic particles accelerated at great speeds for the sole purpose of being destroyed. No one thinks of the ethical implications of this," said Tia Aumiller who founded the group. "There's a limited supply of hadrons in the universe. Do we just want to go around destroying them? What if we run out? What if the hadrons can feel pain? Will we look back at this hundreds of years from now and regret it? Kinda like we do with the killing of bacteria with antibiotics now."

This thread gets wierder and wierder.
First The Earth could be destroyed, and now some looneys are worried about sub atomic particles feeling pain. Lets no try and cure AIDS because we might hurt it in the process :

I'm pretty excited about it actually.

Particle accelerators have been around for decades...sort of an offshoot of atomic physics during WWII. Once Einstein split the atom and scientists discovered atoms were made of electrons, protons and neutrons, they started smashing them together to see if they would break up into smaller pieces, and it turns out they do. They also discovered that smashing particles together with more impact energy creates different types of new particles with different properties.

Most of the existing particle colliders today were built by large labs in direct competition and are getting close to reaching the upper limits of collision energies and although they have discovered many new and exciting things, there are still pieces of the puzzle missing. This machine was built to run at higher energies than existing particle colliders and try to confirm which of the theorised missing particles show up.

Scientists expect the collisions will replicate conditions just milliseconds after the big bang and if micro black holes are created, I don't think it would be the first time. It may be that the outgoing collider has been producing them already but the detection equipment is not sophisticated enough to confirm the fleeting existence of them, although it was good enough to create and detect anti-matter. Either way, they now have a better idea of the properties of the particles they are looking for and have built better detection equipment for the new collider.

Exciting times ahead although I expect it will take months or years for them to conduct the experiments, sift through the results and then make any startling announcements about life, the universe and....everything

Wow... some biccies were spent in that thing.

If anyone knows the Japanese cartoon "Neon Genesis" this reminds me of it lol

Deep underground chambers, huge machines that may destroy the world, hell even the workers there had the letters NERV (compared to CERN) lol

Oh... and in the cartoon, the underground facility and the machines / robots they produced ends up destroying the world.... (in much ths same way as this one would I think lol)

hmmmm bummer hay
