Default $12.00 each for genuine trans pan bolt's ???

Informed by my mechanic this morning that he was supplying "non genuine" trans pan bolt's as the "ford original's" are $12.00 each.

is this right ??? .. surely not!....... I don't reckon they are gold!

I'd hate to build a vehicle from spare parts at that rate!

I wonder if anyone has worked out what one would cost using spare part's, it would be in the 100's of thousand's.

It's about 1,000% of the value of the vehicle. Otherwise Ford wouldn't make any money from their parts departments.

is ford making all of this or is it a "chain" thing with each stop of the box snitching a little.

Robert's, the mechanic is a long time friend of mine, he charges what the parts cost him, I only pay cost plus his $65 per hour.

Little bit from column A little bit from column B. Supplier sells to ford, Ford sells to Ford dealerships and ford dealerships sell to ford franchises.

I think your Mechanic is full of BS. From Ford, part number, 683004, $3.57 each retail.
That is still a little dear but that is what car parts are about.

very interesting.......I just rang Ford here and quoted the part number above and was quoted $3.94 per bolt.

someone somewhere is telling porkies.......I reckon i'l give autopro a ring.

just off the phone from autopro (his supplier)......... $5.00 each plus a flat $10.00 freight charge...... genuine parts apparently.

The vehicle goes in tomorrow so I'll ask a couple of questions regarding this.

once again thank's folk's .......this way I can keep an eye on my mechanic, maybe not as good a friend as first thought.

Are they anything special? Places like Boltmaster and The Metric Men sell every type of fastener you could think of.

Mine were seized in, broke one trying to get it out, others were tight and needed soaking in penetrating solution.

Apparently not a common problem, according to Ford, but does happen occasionally.

All good now, mechanic made a blue at the quoting of the price of bolts (or so he said).

Engine oil and filter service, diff oil change, trans service, two broken trans pan bolts and consequent repair using helicoils, replace serpentine belt ( I supplied a gates belt) $523.00 all up.

Damo, not sure if they are special, wouldn't think so, I have heard of some folk's drilling through the trans flange and using a bolt and nut......true or false, right or not I don't know.

That's what they all say when caught out...

F..ing mechanics, they are kind of like some dogs, they get your trust, then just suddenly try and have nip, kind of testing the water, see if they can get away with it. Has happened to me many times.

Not sure if it was that or whether he was just throwing a bit of bull simply for the sake of it.

even the statement of "non genuine bolts" is incorrect, autopro can't or wont get "non genuine"

Interesting comparison
My last service on my Mercedes-benz included a full trans service and this thread had me digging out the invoice.
MA004 990 35 12 BOLTS TRANS PAN Qty 6 Unit Price $1.15 each plus GST (Kiwi dollars).
That's servicing a Mercedes-benz through a M Benz dealer.

And you reckon he's a good mate, really ?

Ford sell the bolts for $3.94 so that is already over Mercedes price, would not have liked to get all the work done at the dealership.

I still count him as a good friend, albeit that he tells the occasional skite.

$12 each. Pretty sure I could buy a whole set for that at the local bearing/bolt supply place.

I'd say a genuine mistake. Of all things to try and get extra money on it wouldn't be the price of some bolts. Plus if he was trying to rip you off he would have gotten the genuine ones.

I'd say not. In fact at that price he would be lucky to keep the doors open. Do the math. Say 40 hrs @ 65 = $2600. After operating costs he would be lucky to draw a gross wage of $1k

Its not like he was going to charge you $12 per bolt though, he looked up the price, obviously got the wrong price so offered to source non genuine bolts. If he was trying to rip you off he would of just said genuine bolts are $12 each and I cant get anything else, not offer to get something cheaper. Sounds like he looked for a bolt that he wouldn't have to replace very often and just got the wrong price then offered to find something cheaper for you.

Sure there are some dodgy mechanics out there out to make as much as possible off of everything but people jumping to conclusions and labeling them dodgy for things like this is silly and a good way to ruin a guys rep. Happens all the time people jump to conclusions and ruin a shops rep, happened years ago with TSS on this very site until the owner of TSS told the full story.

As someone else mentioned though, even at $12 a pop that's understandable, every seller along the way has to make a buck. You cant buy something off of Ford and then sell it on to someone else for the exact same price, you'd make no money and go out of business. That,s why its cheaper to buy direct.
