Hi All,
Having a chat to a bloke at work last night,long story short we were having a debate about LPG, he claims it can be used as a replacement for old Freon Gas in the old cooling systems. I reckon he is wrong, however granted LPG is a cold gas.... Anyone heard of this? Is it feasable? I can't see it on the RFC134A based refrigerant systems, but for old fridges, X series falcon air cons? He states the gas goes striaght in, once the freon is flushed out, and runs beautifully... Is he right????? Cheers

Afew years ago there was quite a few different blends of air con gas being used in older R12 systems and 1 of them was LPG.
I would not recommend it as imagine if you had an air con leak in the car, could be quite a big bang.

Hydrocarbon refrigerants are widely used in the auto industry. It is superior to R134a and a lot safer than you might think. It can be used in R12 and R134a systems.

My dad told me this aswell, he says it was the norm years ago, but extremely illegal now because of the chance of a leak in the car..
He says it was much better than the ones now though...

Maybe not in SA but its definately illeagal in other states. And Highly dangerous. Not just if it leaks but mainly incase the vehicle is involved in an accident.Crash and Burn!

I heard there was some issues getting it legal in Vic, but I think its ok now.
As far as safety goes, R134a is also flammable. I dont think less than 400g of HR12 is worth worrying about, at least no more than 60litres of LPG or 75 of petrol!! |

using a flammable gas in your AC system is not such a good idea. in most cars your blower motor resistor is directly in the path of the AC. if your evaporator starts leaking you get flammable gas, a healthy mixture of oxygen and a high current circuit all in the same spot.
that said, it does work extremely well as a refridgerant gas.
