Default 2009 Sales Figures

NEW VEHICLE MARKET ENDS STRONG YEAR WITH RECORD DECEMBER

The new vehicle market ended the year strongly to record annual sales that well exceeded industry forecasts with many of the additional sales attributed to the Federal Government’s business tax break.

Official VFACTS data released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) shows that 937,328 passenger cars, SUVs and commercial vehicles were sold in the calendar year 2009 (down 7.4 per cent compared to 2008).

The year ended strongly with a record number of vehicles sold in the month of December (up 15.9% on 2008).

“Given all the challenges and uncertainties thrown at the industry by the global economy this is an exceptional result,” FCAI Chief Executive Andrew McKellar said.

“The ‘game changing’ measure that restored confidence in the marketplace and stimulated additional demand was the bonus tax break for business,” Mr McKellar said.

“The final outcome for the year has surpassed the industry’s original expectations by some 57,000 vehicles and a significant proportion of this additional volume can be attributed to the tax break,” he said.

Looking ahead, the FCAI forecasts that new vehicle sales in 2010 will exceed 940,000.

“The challenges of the past year have not yet fully passed so 2010 will be a year of consolidation for the industry,” Mr McKellar said.

One note of caution influencing the industry outlook relates to interest rates.

“There is a real risk that if market lending rates are further increased, excessively, the momentum of the economic recovery now underway could be damaged,” he said.

Toyota was the best performing brand in 2009 for the seventh year in a row with a market share of 21.4%, ahead of Holden with 12.8% and Ford with 10.3%

The most popular vehicle model, for the fourteenth year in a row, was the Holden Commodore; ahead of the Toyota Corolla then the Toyota Hilux.

Fiesta is a grand too expensive and the Focus is less than 12 months away, 2010 will be a better year no doubt.

Fiesta's problem is perception I think. LX is very well priced for the features.

That's what everyone said at the start of last year, Mondeo, FG's finally hitting showrooms because of turbo build delays etc.

I already know the worlds gone mad.
I don't need these sales figures to confirm it...

i'm perplexed how ford brought out a brand new falcon . who most ford owners agree is the best falcon to date , yet they are way behind holden commadore , toyota and mazda, ford should be baffled that they can produce a comparative some say better sedan , yet fall way back in marcket share with the falcon . that must be really disheartening .

Unfortunatly people choose their pocket over quality and reputation over what is actually produced, i think thats what the problem is.

Falcon sedan is outselling Commodore sedan, and has since August.

Holden has a huge fleet following, and Toyota is a fleet and rental queen.

Ford are selling every Falcon they make, and most of them are high spec cars. I don't think Ford are too worried at this stage. If Falcon was only selling at Aurion levels, things might be different.

focus 685 and mondeo 315 for december, those numbers most be of concern. On the other hand 923 for fiesta, 1225 for territory and 1342 for the ute are good numbers.

Falcon ute beat holden ute by 76 units for the year.

I wonder if that means that the Falcon wagon survives?

Good news for the ute and Territory.

Holden sold over 1500 Sportwagons in November, does Ford really think people want the Mondeo wagon.

Just recently Holden have successfully negotiated with the rental car companies to buy Commodore wagons.

I think you'll also find that the issue with Fiesta is not demand, rather supply. Every single one of those 900 odd units would've sold itself, we can't get enough from Europe to satisfy the dealers.

Mondeo is about right. Private buyers don't buy during december, and that is a heavy private buyer car. In addition, the entire medium segment is quite small in size (and down year on year). I think a few months back the mondeo atcually outsold the honda accord euro (by about 1 sale) so i think it is going ok...

As for focus well that is not a great result at all. Didn't think i'd see the day the fiesta outsold its big brother. But then again, focus has been struggling for a whiel and ford has not put much effort into it recently (no ads etc.) i even noticed a driveaway deal on Xr5t focus....which was interesting.

Does anyone know when the new one is turning up? I take it is being released in final form at a motorshow near you (detroit?) and then in production in europe this year??

I'm not buying that line anymore with the Fiesta. I walk past my local Ford almost every day & there must be at least 20 Fiestas in the holding area not sold.. There is more Fiestas than Falcons & it has been this way for a few months now.

Hey mate, sorry but have to disagree, if you look at the figures provided by russellw there was 741 mazda6 sold, 710 subaru liberty, 583 honda accord and 2314 toyota camry's sold for the month. Apart from supply issues the mondeo should be thereabouts in the 600-700 range.

Leaving aside the camry which i would suspect to be majority fleet the others would be majority private sales. I just think its a good range that should be doing better.

I was going to say the same thing Archilino. Mondeo should be doing better.

I read the other day that the Camry has around the 20-25% private sales.

Yes i think i should retract that comment LOL!. I checked the sales for the month after i posted that and it seems the mondeo did have an off month. Still, i'm sure it did out sell the accord euro late last year?? Maybe someone can confirm.

EDIT: November 2009. Mondeo came 4th in segment with 528 sales verus accord euro at 527. Quite a bit of difference compared to this month some 200 more!!! Can't work that out, but with such low sales i suppose one boatload of a particular model with pent up demand maybe??

The thing that is interesting is that it is a pretty consistent bugger. Sure it might drop into the 290-300 range on a bad month and the 400s on a good one but in general it is in the 350 or so month in month out. I don't know whether it is supply of a particular spec or not but it is what it is.... As for camry, well is a fleet hack now (hence the dominant sales position) and shouldn't be in that company frankly....

The Mondeo outsold the Accord Euro in Feb 2008 (470 to 450) and Aug 2007 (513 to 479) as well as November 2009 (528 to 527).

Cheers
