Our son who has a disability loves his apple computer stuff, leaves me feeling totally inadaquate is trying to find one of the attached locally without being charged arm and a leg, any help re advise direction to go looking etc

It looks like an SD card/USB reader.
I bought a cheap one on ebay for about $7. Haven't had a problem with it. The genuine Apple ones are $39. If you have markets nearby, you could try those, or any of the Asian electronics stores.
