Default New Orleans.... gone!

Just watched the news about New Orleans... its simply gone. A most amazing thing to see, an entire city not just flooded but basically totally destroyed.

I seriously have to wonder if they will bother rebuilding it or simply create New New Orleands somewhere else now. They are saying it will take months to simply drain it to a point where construction can begin.

Amazing.

I agree, the degree of destruction is amazing. It reminded me a little of scenes from the movie, Day after Tomorrow.

A real shame. N'Yorleans was one place I really wanted to go - the depth of culture there is (was) amazing.

Ever heard of a country called Holland?

How about several hundred million people who live on geologically unstable land with cinstant volcanic and earthquake activity, you know, like Japan, New Zealand, West coast USA........

How about those silly people who live in areas that are constantly being flattened by cyclones, you know, QLD, NT & WA.....

Or even those who live is places that can't win premierships, you know, like Victoria........

Weird huh?
:

On the news today, they say that fatalities could exceed 1000!!

Hope we (they) have seen the end of the hurricane and they can start getting their lives back in some kind of order soon.

Really was quite shocking seeing what happened, shows you just how inferior we are to nature. Things like this will only become more common and catastrophic with the population increasing and people becoming scatterd in almost every part of the world.

If you believe that sort of crap, useless, I suggest you read a book titled "State of Fear" by Michael Crichton, and a few of the articles he references.

One of mankind's greatest mistakes is to believe that we're powerful enough to effect things like that.

Its a terrible humanitarian situation, however no sympathy for people/countries who are stupid enough to build such a large centre at or below sea level.

Oh and the comotion on the street. No one to blame but themselves. Wooohoo lets have gun stores, its out right damn it, oh hang on you mean people will steal guns and loot, I didn't sign up for this.

I was really shocked to see this on the news... what a mess! Poor, poor people. I saw pics on the news with prisoners sitting on the very top of the gaol walls, with the water just below them and the barbed wire just above them. No matter what they've done, I hope they get out ok.

On a lighter note, I just hope that Lestat and the other vampires are ok :

Exactly. The origins of the south go back a looooong time, well before the country breaking free from britain. Just like everywhere else in the world, the French found some damn good land and started living off it.

I dont think you can really blame a country for establishing a big city below sea level. It just.. happends... money comes into the area, people move there for jobs, start families etc. etc.

It's not like N.O is a big city either - comaprable with Adelaide in terms of population.

It just boggles the mind. We're used to seeing natural disasters and the humanitarian crisis that follows - but not in a country like amercia. There's no food, no water, no power, no communications and the only way in is via chopper. A developed country like that, you would expect aid to be up and running within hours of it happening. Just goes to show, all the money, technology and people cant overcome nature.

Lots of oil wells, pipelines and refineries in the region as well (obviously). But i cant help but feel petrol prices dont mean sh!t when there's hundreds of thousands of people at risk of disease, starvation etc. I saw a story last night and a mother and her 4 week old baby are living on the interstate, waiting for help. No food, no water. Living on the damn interstate with a new born baby. I wont be complaining about paying $1.40/L this weekend.

Having gone over there in the early 80s all i can say about time they cleaned it up. I know thats not the way it should be done but. The places had a stench about it all the time i was there, which was 8 weeks, i was working over there. Great people and all but. It is sad in a way that the old french part is gone so to burbon st saw muddy waters play there as well a john lee hooker. I am sure given time it will come back bigger and better than ever. You know how the Yanks are.

Well then blame the French, as they originally built the city named after Orlean in France. The levees were built in the 1730's to reclaim the flood basin because of its rich soil for farming.

The city of New Orleans was then owned by the spanish for awhile until it was given back to the french, then it was owned by the US after the louisianna purchase in 1803. The entire state was purchased for 4 cents an acre.

I spent a week in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and some smaller northern Louisiana towns. It was an amazing place with mostly very friendly people. The French Quarter and Bourbon St was like new years eve every night. You could buy a $1 beer from a street vendor and you are allowed to walk into any bar with your drink.

This is a photo I took of the Oak Alley plantation house outside the city. I wonder what state it's now as I remember it was right next to the levy.
