Default RTA Weight rip off

Just got my fairmont GHIA rego'd (NSW) and noticed it cost over $100 more than my old car. I asked the RTA and they said any car over 1705 kgs puts it into a different category, the fairmont ghia says 1798 on the rego slip.....I looked up the NRMA site and they reckon it weighs 1531 and the owners manual says 1640, 110 more than the base fairmont which is where NRMA screwed up I guess. Im thinking of a weigh bridge ticket next and see what it really weighs.....$100 extra every year adds up

1800kg for the car is up near BA weight with a boss. Your car maybe that heavy with a full tank of fuel, V8 and a very heavy driver.

I have been wondering what the ute really is like ... with current mods ... i am sure most weighbridges will give you a ticket of your weight without driver ... I'd get it weigh with a full tank as well.

i weighed my xr6 on tolls weighbridge, the figure on the rego label was on the money about 1580 if i remember correctly, i guess the ghia would have a bit more luxo weight, insulation and flashy stuff, couldnt see it being more than 1640 though, i would give it weigh up .......even just satisfy your curiosity. does yours have heavy towing gear??

My AU XR6 weighs 1540kg (manual). This was on the weighbridge at WSID. My old ED Fairmont (6cyl) was 1640kg (based on owner's manual kerb weight). There's no way a fairmont ghia will only weigh 1531kg's....

The RTA won't use your individual vehicle's weight to determine their costs. It's prob based on info given to them by the manufacturer.

His owner's manual gave him the figure of 1640 though. Why would Ford supply two different figures?

If it's good enough for the manual, it should be good enought for the RTA!

They introduced that a few years ago here in WA.The more your car weighs, the more your rego. What I don't get is why.Do they think a 1600kg car is going to damage bitumen (Ie:create cracks, potholes e.t.c : ) more then a 1200kg car,or something and so they think the can justify it,by putting the money towards "fixing" our roads? I don't think so.Just another revenue raiser

I saw the RTA today and he told me anything over 1505 not 1705.......and 1595 is the correct weight so it didn't make a difference anyway, oh well
