To the E-Series Knowledge Machine
I am thinking about buying a 1995 Ford Fairmont GHIA V8 and was wondering if there was anything that is an issue with these cars. Also has anyone heard of "hi-tech" extractors for this car? Did all Ghias EF to EL come with interior chrome handles? I heard a rumour that the V8's auto's are not as strong as the 6cyl auto's - is this true?

i highly doubt the I6 autos are stronger then V8 ones, i'd be inclined to say the opposite.
i think the V8 valve body is better.

V8 autos have a slightly different stall speed I believe (slightly higher, but SFA), and perhaps some better quality bands (once again, not too much better).

V8 BTR's use steel check valves, and a lot more steel in the valvebody construction than an I6 BTR. When trans shops rebuild I6 BTR's, first thing they do is put a V8 valvebody and check valves in.
There's nothing too specific to check, same with all E-Series really. Brakes, transmission, electrics, power windows. Being a V8, there's one other major issue that needs attention.. A total lack of power, but that's easily fixed with a manifold and some heads ;)

I bought the car with about 125,000km on it nearly 4 years ago, it has 215,000km on it now.
The main problems I've had with it was burning the C4 hub in the trans at about 190k, broken LF window regulator, exploded both radiator side tanks (during a burnout), the blend door motor was shagged when I bought the car, and I've killed 2 fuel pumps since I've had it. The 2nd fuel pump was my doing, the in-tank pump uses the petrol around it to cool down, if you run the tank low they run hotter and burn out quicker. I service the car every 5,000km, and maintain it fairly well, but I'm the first to admit I do drive it hard, and cars don't last forever. The only fairly common problem with the 5.0 is the timing case corroding and pumping coolant into the oil, but apart from that, with regular servicing, they will last longer than the rest of the car. I've seen a fair few threads made on people needing new MAF sensors lately as well.

the v8's are great they keep going and going and going. All internals of the 8's last forever but sometimes there are problems (depends on how you drive it and condition). The main problems that i have found in my v8 are that many connections, such as piping, seals etc are very weak but they are easily replaced.
Trans will last a while depending on the amount of stress its under. But otherwise if its regulary service it will be one of the most reliable cars ever. SVT8 |

Seems they are pretty much bullet proof
Main concern is the V8 engine - everything else would be the same as my current EF Monty
