AU recall update - Page 2

Take it and get it done guys.

I did 6 months ago or more and I stood over them EVERY second they were near the car watching EVERY move they made. Insist that you watch them do the work.

Steering rack recall was for all AU1's and some AU2's.. not sure about the rest.

its like a smallish silver rectangle shape sticker , has ford logo printed on them ( has on mine anyways ) - a few details and completion dates , i thnk there was only 2 recalls for the au from the info i have found so far - on my car the first fault was fixed in 2001 , and the second fault ( the steering fault mentioned here i think ) was done in 2004 ...

open the drivers door , look for the hinge 2/3rds the way down the door , look under the hinge on the door itself and also check under the other side of the hinge connecting to the car body - it should be around there under that hinge , on the door or on the body of the car (mine was on the body under the hinge - the front pillar)

Confirmed: There was no recall for the AU3 in regards to the steering rack problem.

I had mine done @18 months ago. I was told by a "reliable source" that (if the vehicle owner did not have the recall addressed, after "all reasonable attempts by Ford to contact said owner", then any liability, should failure occur, is borne solely by the vehicle owner & NOT by the Ford Motor Company). Not trying to scare anyone but I was told this by a source within Ford when I was working with their Motorsport arm. I've attatched a service bulletin which should clear things up. I should also add, I have NO stickers, but I do know a decent Ford dealer will tell you if it's been done or contact Ford Customer Service Centre.

I have a crecking noise in the front end when i turn corners or go over bumps! Has this got anything to do with the recall?

For the record. Of the 200,000+ Au's on the road a grand total of 3 have had the steering rack issue to such an extent that it was a problem. Its not going to fall out tomorrow guys.

My AU 1 had the recall work done.

My AU2 hasn't got the sticker. I had some keys coded to the car at Ford last week, if it needs some recall work done, I expect I'd get a letter pretty soon.

Incidently, one of the recalls is well explained, the steering rack welds. What was the second one for? I heard there was one for a throttle cable. Anyone else heard this?

I was looking at what Ford did to my car when i got it done and i think my daughter could of welded them up better. If i had to do it again i would get 2 lock nuts and put them on instead

I know with mine (& some others) the dealer (Coffey Ford) had a checklist on their computer so mine was added (by vin), I was told that it was "linked" to Ford's own system or something like that, so technically, I was removed from the recall list, & have received NO further corrospondence. So, no you should not receive notification IF the job was done. If you're not sure, try calling Ford's "customer care centre".

I'm pretty sure my car has 4 stickers from memory and the only recall work that has been done since I have had the car is the steering rack and 1 other must be the suspension upright re tension early in '99. So what are the other 2 for?

There shouldnt be any debate.... u get a letter, take your car in for your own safety, all thats done is a weld on the rack mount stud (AU1) or an inspection to make sure the factory weld is there(AU2)... any one who thinks their rack will fail after this is a fool, the only reasons racks will be replaced when doing this recall is if it is found to be leaking already, which has nothing to do with the recall issue

I've said it before and I'll say it again, 5 out of the 6 Ford dealers I've let service my cars are incompetent HACKS. My opinion... but I'm probably a stupid fool as you suggested for not trusting these HACKS!!! :jab:

I got a letter a year ago saying go and get it done..

I have not taken it to get done, no problems with it and my car gets pushed hard and abused more then most ive seen, never ever had a leak or a click or whatever from the front end..
Also I WONT, no I REFUSE to take my car to a ford dealer... it will never happen EVER..

when I service my car I check up and down the steering rack, steering arms and everything really to do with steering, nothings ever come loose.. no point imo..

Just a thought...

A few of you sound like you're worried to take your car to a Ford dealer for anything 'cause you don't trust their work in general, but are also worried about the risk of not having the recall done...

So why not just take it to a specialist welder or maybe if you have a mate who is a skilled welder get them to do it - solves both your problems then. It's only a dab of spot weld on two studs, so for any decent welder it's really a five second job.

As said, just a thought.

sounds like a good excuse to get it up on hoist for free and have a good inspection over the whole underneath of the car to me.

I have kept an eye on mine since i found out about the recall. I do my own servicing and repairs, and only had servicing done by ford up until it hit 30000 kms. I have had the various letters sent to my by ford for this recall, but as i have kept an eye on it, the rack studs on mine are fine, they havent loosened off, so i am not going to bother taking it in for a fix.
I have seen a few that have been fixed by ford, all they do is put a tiny weld on the inside of the stud to stop it from unscrewing from the crossmember, if it were to happen.
I would not be too worried about getting ford to do it, its a very simple fix, and will not damage any part of your car.
I am not telling everyone to not get it fixed, by all means get it done to save hassles latter on.

But I do know the frustration people feel when ripped off by Ford. I once had a Laser serviced and the rear drums were deliberately machined by them to a fraction within their servicable limits, presumably hoping that I would stuff them the next time and need to replace them. This was in 1991 and the only 2 times my Fords have been back are to get the recall work done, and to code 2 keys last week.

I was so hacked off with their service all those years ago, and the arm and a leg cost of a routine service that they have missed out on 15 years business!

Have mine booked in for next thursday to have it done.Hope that the problem is fixed.got a final notice in the mail as well.didnt get a first notice.Have had the car 12 months and has taken them this long to find the new owner

Which manufacturers don't charge an arm and a leg for servicing. Ford's no different to any other manufacturer. They're all the same.

I just need a new steering rack and power steer pump ... full stop ... nothing to do with the recall.

Although I wish it was.

And OZFORDAU ... I have the same grinding/creaking/graunching issue when turning at slow speed as well ... I am used to it ... also a love clunking noise from the tie-rod end on the driver's side too.

I need to get it sorted soon though. Just not looking forward to the cost of it.
