No you do not need one, but if you do have one it must be roadworthy.

It's not compulsory to have one, but you should have it "just in case".

What you don't need is two threads asking the same question in two seperate areas. _

Stick a can of phenilek (sp?) in the boot, and you won't need a spare.

I carry two spares. One in the car and one around my guts.

Was under the impression in NSW if your vehicle comes standard from factory with a spare tyre it must have one in the vehicle to be classed as roadworthy. I have seen someone get defected for not carrying one before.

Replace it with a can of GOO like the Mercedes 4WDs have. As for legalities: Sydney County Council had a fleet of vehilces with NO spare tyres. They had a maintenance truck that went around with a supply of each type of spare wheel. Hence, when we bought an ex S.C.C Escort van from the govenment auctions, it didn't have a spare. Generally, cops will only defect your car after you have brought attention to yourself by being a d-head.

You mean a WHEEL BRACE. You need a wheel brace to take the wheel off and a tyre iron to take the tyre off the wheel rim.

How can you get defected for not havin a spare? it has absolutely nothing to do with the saftey or emissions of the vehicle

Spacesaver wheels SHOULD be illegal! They completetly null and void all handling and braking properties of any car. Just another example of living in a capitalist run society.

ehehe...

If it were illegal not to have a spare, I would assume that this is the case because alot of (uneducated) people would try to drive on the flat tyre...

And that IS a hazard/safety concern.
