Buy this before I do. Dont waste your time with cars over 150,000kms. Even if you did spend the coin to put it on gas the one Ive linked to looks like a damned good car for a very good price.

Bottle of Gentleman Jack is fine thanks

Where do I start...

I've owned both, and still own AU's, 4 of them.

The B series is a good car IMO, however there are a couple of things which I don't like about them.
The ICC is a complete and utter tragedy.
The interior is cheap looking.
Fly by wire is terrible.
The styling is bland and hasn't aged well at all.

The drive is decent enough, very quiet, (too) refined, and plenty of go from the whole range.

Handling is pretty decent too, but not so great from the V8's.

I won't comment on reliability as I didn't own my B series long enough (50k) to experience any dramas.

I sold my BA ute for an AU ute and preferred the AU. Both manuals, both I6's.

The AU is a very good car IMO, several years ahead of it's time. There isn't much about them I don't like, which is why I have so many, and still looking for more.
By comparison to the B series, the climate control section is so much better and easier to use. Some don't like the egg and dash of the AU, but I think it's superb.
I prefer the standard climate control to the fancier electric one of the Fairmonts.
Lovely interior overall.
The throttle response of all AU's is fantastic.

The styling, whilst a little bland on the povo models, has aged incredibly well, looking like a newer/fresher car than the B series.

The drive of all AU's is excellent, quiet, refined enough to still have some mongrel, and enough go from most of them (but not quite as much as every sister B series).

Handling is exceptional for such a large car, which IMO is due to the still not so heavy mass of more modern cars.

Reliability is also exceptional, ask any taxi driver.
I have also had a great run from all my AU's

The bottom line is, they are actually fairly different to drive.
They go about their business quite different, and if you really really like one, you probably won't like the other.

Personally I feel the AU is more of an enthusiasts car, and the B series is more for the mums and dads.

The AU of course wins this for me, but I can understand your wife wanting the B...

My partner needed a rear bearing on her Fairlane, they bent 2 shafts trying to get bearings off and ended up just using good second hand . apparently they are very hard to get the bearing off the shaft .

My old (most recent old) red one (AU 2 Xr8 220 auto) was for sale on carsales a few weeks ago, listed at $4500 - and was snapped up before I could even ask the missus if we could go have a look. (Bucky sent me a link to it). It had everything you listed above, including the leather from your son's Fairmont (oops.....)! There are some bargains out there!
