Default Carbon fibre bonnet illegal?

Shopping at Water Gargens on Sunday, I walked past a Yaris with a carbon fibre bonnet. The bonnet is tiny and made me wonder what are the possible benefits.
Then after checking out a Yaris fanboy website I found my answer!
I's say that they're some sort of chick magnet on planet Yaris!

excerp from a yaris fan site RE: carbon fibre bonnets.

yea its not legal here in Aust. Something do to with crashing and how carbon fibre breaks into sharp pieces or sumfin. I wouldnt risk it. Just paint ur hood black or buy some CF Stickers

AS per quote above any bonnet that has not come from a car manufacturer and has not been subjected to crash testing will require an engineers certificate to demonstrate that prototype bonnets were tested to meet with ADR rules and designs.

You can put them on your car and drive around with them chances of getting caught aren`t as high as a loud exhaust but if you get pulled ovet by someone who knows his stuff and wants to get yoube prepared.

Pretty sure a Yaris goes as fast with a carbon fibre bonnet as it would with a mat black painted bonnet.

Maybe a NOZ or Autometer or Excedy sticker would help.

Dont blame the carbon fibre bonnet, anyone in a yarris should be picked & thrown in the clink for their actions :-)

The only car worse than the yaris is that little bloody "SMART" car thing!
I don't even think I've ever seen one on the freeway come to think of it?
I wouldn't have thought that they were speed limited...

Just to let you know if you're looking for Falcon after market bonnets, Blits Bodykits in QLD make road legal body kits. I seem to recall them being the first in the country to make their own fibreglass AND road legal bonnets.

From their website: http://www.blitsbodykits.com.au/
Quote:
BLITS is the first Australian company in Australia
to manufacture street legal fibreglass bonnets, that are transport approved Australia wide..

Carbon fibre bonnets aren't legal lol, unless engineered as mention before.
Mate has an EVO with full Carbon Fibre Wide Body kit like something from Need For Speed games lol, got done by the cops and now it's his track day car lol.

If your car is black and has carbon fibre not easy to get caught but if its white lol be prepared for full 1 hour examination from the TMU

Are you taking legal advice from some one that spells something as "sumfin"?

Probably more to do with proving the bonnet will not adversely interfere with crumple zones, airbag sensors etc.

I doubt it would be anything to do with the production of sharp edges during an accident, carbon fibre will crack but it does not shatter like a dinner plate as some make out. If it was due to this production of sharp edges then no car would be allowed to have glass, they would have to have aircraft grade perspex. Added to that, severely deformed metal panels produce a crap load of sharp edges, I have cut myself on them a few times crawling into bent up cars. Also, cars such as Lamborghini, Ferarri, BMW, Mercedes etc would not be allowed to import vehicles that have CF body panels.

It's all about asking the manufacturer to prove compliance with relevant standards and regulations before you cough up cash, or accept that your car may end up with pretty coloured window stickers courtesy of your friendly local copper.

Hi matey ... I have a theory (not another bloody theory!)
(Can you tell I'm at work with nothing better to do)

Anyway, my little next door neighbour is only about 5 foot ...
Nice kid, not as hoon like us ...Bought a Yaris cause it's small and he feels a bit more comfortable in it. He isn't the most confident driver.

So how do people like him get to be a little bit cool with their cars?
(please no stupid statements, I'm being serious now)...

maybe this is how it manifests itself (and other weird ways).
eg: if he's the only one with this bonnet, won't that make him a little special and unique. (and I don't mean "hang in there Sunshine" special).
He's a good kid.

I know wat ur saying but seriously as yaris with a carbon fiber bonnet. Fair enough if he thinks it all well and good and at the end of the day it's his opinion what matters.

Don't get me wrong I don't have anything against yaris's I think they are a good car for what they are but I hate it when u see theM lowered with body kits and massive spoilers trying to be some stupid ricer when they aren't.

Everybody needs to "feel" cool any way they can?
Some obviously in their divine wisdom believe that by adding bits to a Yaris, that they are 'value" adding. We think what a waste... and I agree with you. It's strictly superficial and cosmetic, in the way Frankenstein also had cosmetic surgery!

To give you the opposite extreme in attitude, Gary's dad went spazzo in him for taking out a big loan to buy a new XW GTHO back then.
Said it was a total waste of money...

While at work today, spoke to an engineer (RTA signatory or whatever it is) responsible for a huge number of seriously fast cars in southern Sydney. Specifically asked him about the legality of a carbon fibre bonnet. His words to me (more or less):

If it's engineered, it's legal- there are heaps of cars running round with them and sometimes the police can hassle but if there's an engineers certificate for it then they can't do anything.

So there you go NSW people- get and engineers certificate for it and you're home free.

Also spoke to NRMA, they said if it passes through the RTA then they will insure it. i.e. if it's a minor mod or engineered, they will insure it.

its got me beat as to why people bother apart from the bling factor

seriously, any weight reduction from switching to a carbon fibre bonnet is going to be offset by the stereo, big blingy wheels and the rest of that crap

...then there are those of us who are actually looking for weight loss, improved clearance or better engine bay cooling that comes with many carbon bonnets (usually not all at the same time though...)

Aftermarket Fiberglass/carbon bonnets aren't roadworthy due to the fact that they haven't been ADR approved (in most cases). The bonnet needs to be shown that it will protect a pedestrian from engine components, and be proved to deform in an applicable manner in a accident.

I just gave you the answer from an RTA Engineering signatory, is that not enough for you?

The only cars on the road that currently protect pedestrians heads to any sort of degree are the deployable bonnets from Jaguar and Citroen or Peugeot (I can't remember which).

If you want to get technical about ADR approvals, don't bother modifying your car at all- virtually no modifications are ADR approved, and that includes headlights which output the incorrect brightness or colour of light.
