Interstate courier?

A mate of mine in sydney is hoping to get down to melbourne to stay at my place for a while, but we need to be able to get his PC case to my house.

Was wondering if anyone knows

a) any good, reliable couriers that do sydney to melbourne
b) what kind of cost it'd be likely to be...(roughly 20kg case?)
c) any other (preferably cheaper) option?

I was thinking that if he got a train rather than flying, that he may even be able to sit the PC case next to him or something...

Also, I priced a sydney to melb flight with jetstar, and the cheapest was $79 each way (online booking).....Then my mum said her friend booked her tickets to QLD, and paid $69 each way (online booking). $10 cheaper for a longer trip?

Has your friend thought of going by bus? I can't remember the weight limit but I had alot of extra luggage coming back from Hervey Bay that they let me through with.
He would not be able to sit the luggage next to him though, even if he was prepared to pay for the seat ticket...oh&s!

TNT is a good start. couriers go on size over weight on most items. allow 3 days to deliver as well.

I used to get stuff sent to me by Startrack (i think). They were good because they were one of a few that would be able to track your parcel/package as it was delivered. Not all couriers do.

How about Toll Priority? They have tracking available and SYD-MEL can be done with a next day delivery.

I work for Toll - part of the express division in Melb, but have no idea about the cost. Just make sure you're clear on whether your goods are insured by the freight company. If not, you may need to arrange some. A computer would be susceptible to damage obviously, and us freight sorters aren't always gentle.

A piece of advice - NEVER travel by Train. XPT is the worst passenger service there is. My dad is 2nd highest train controller in the state (not bragging btw, just putting it into context), and he is actually toldby his bosses not to catch it.

Ive heard numeruos stories of people stealing other peoples bags when they get off the train, because all the luggage is stored near the doors of each carriage, it's very easy to steal somenoe elses bag and just walk away with it as if it were your own. Not good when it's something valuable like a PC.

Id suggest packing it very securely (lots of foam and packing around it etc) and flying down, quickestand easiest way. Just make sure no matter what way you transport it you mark it very clearly as fragile - it will help if you have a case should it be damaged etc.

thanks for the other replies, so far i've only really searched for couriers online, and the 1 that i got a quote from was something like $81, and that was with a $20 online booking discount...so $101! seemed way to high

i'll see if i can find the websites of these other 1's mentioned

all their sites are too complicated with giving quotes!

I've emailed one of them for an estimate, and can't remember which 1 it was lol. so hopefully they reply

Also, for most companies these days you do need an account but I'm sure that with Toll you can pay by CC and you'll get a quote/job number for it.

mate never travel by bus long distance ,its a nightmare,but you can send your case by busfreight (mc Cafferties,greyhound) they have offices all over Australia,and can pick up from your door and deliver to your mates door,and you dont need an account.they are in the yellow pages.

I send something the other month, I think it was with Allied. Didn't need an account, just paid with visa and it was all dandy.

hmmm

with a computer case being so big, will it go by weight? I noticed on one of the courier sites, it said something about the size then the weight....

is it usually just by weight? If so, Aus Post looks pretty damn cheap

It depends on it's dimensions. If the cubic weight is more than the actual weight, then the cubic weight is used and charged. The way courier companies calculate cubic weight for domestic is (I'm pretty sure) L x W x H / 5000.

It's either the actual or cubic weight, which ever is greater.

yeah mate... i did the dimensions etc (of my computer case) at their website and got that quote.

Well i send cylinder Heads with Aussie Post and its Cheaper then T.N.T. or even McPhees (only tryed them 2) and im told 2 days from melb to syd.

I know that where I work the weight size classes are:
standard - <0.1 cubic metres/<25Kg
Heavy/large - between 0.1 and 0.2 cubic metres/ between 25 and 50kg

So if other companies are similar, it will be classed as standard

How much does it actually weigh? Your cubic weight would be 9.7 kgs or rounded to 10 kgs.

i used the exact measurements for his case, and estimated it at about 20kg with the hardware in it (its roughly 16kg empty) and got the $17.65 for regular as well.

Australian Air Express ... cost me about $50 to send a PC in a well packed box to Brisbane ... this included insurance as well ... it goes on weight of the package.

I also work for Australian National Couriers - aka Fleets Flyers (as a driver) .... but as mentioned before ... you usually need an account ... although some cash/cheque jobs are allowed.

But I found going to the airport and going to Austr. Air Express to be the easiest for quick interstate delivery.

Try... for once... thinking outside the box... literally.
Why pay 50 bucks for frieght, when you can buy a new case for 20 bucks when you arrive at the destination. Just pack the cards, mainboard and hdd's into a briefcase and take it as carry on.

Only a chump would pay for freight on shipping their own PC to the same destination they plan on travelling to themselves.
