If you mount the cradle for the head unit out a bit (ie push it all the way in, then pull back about 15mm), it doesn't stick out at all. Took me a while to figure out how to do that, but it ended up being nothing 2 countersunk self tappers couldn't cure.

Does anyone know if there is a brand of headunit that uses the steering wheel buttons on the AU?

Do they make black pockets to go under the headunit or do you get a grey one & paint it black?

I used to have a sony xplod unit that had a remote thing that you fitted to the end of your indicator or wiper stick, I would assume you could just chop the end off and wire it into your steering wheel controlls without too much greif

You can get an adaptor to do it, I think stinger or alpine make/distribute one.

works with a few different brands from memory, almost brought one but decided not to as was almost a couple a hundred...

And yes that is a nokia hands free button.

I don't have the phone cradle anymore as my new phone has blue tooth and I just use that instead...

I thought the steering wheel controls worked with Blaupunkt and Alpine decks.

Do a search.... They don't work with aftermarket Headunits.

Stinger make one for Pioneer.

Alpine, I believe have incorported this feature into all their latest headunits. I will let you guys know how I go, as I am getting a 06 headunit, within the month.

Lightning Audio make an Adapter, to suit most Headunits.

And there is another from the U.S.

Cost: ~$100-200

It's called a CAT09 from memory .... it is on the CAA website.
But cArSiK has a thread in here regarding it ... with part numbers.
Autobarn and JB HiFi sell them .... I am going to get one when funds permit for my Au steering wheel controls with my Pioneer headunit.
