Does it matter per say? The key benefit of low range is to get to your engine max torque at a lower speed. Getting 500 Nm at 2000 rpm at 5 kms/hr vs 30 kms/hr .

Hill climb and decent, obstacle like rock crawling, axle articulation etc. As well as manoeuvrability like reversing a trailer uphill etc. My old Jeep Wrangler Rubicon has insane (factory) low range gearing. Top speed in 1st low was walking speed. |

Was really handy, like your example, of getting my XR8 and trailer up the driveway. Getting to peak torque at a couple of kms/hr. Was handy going up the sand dunes as well as the car wouldn't go up in High at Stockton beach.

Using low ratio also doesn’t load up and increase temps on the trans and engine as much, like your soft sand example. |

There’s a lot of trains with lots more tonnage than that
I was in rail freight in the eighties and it was 2000 tonnes then It’s a lot more now And the coal and ore trains I m guessing 7000 tonnes plus Someone on here will know the right numbers |

I'm sure you're right.... But that wasn't the point..... There's a bit of torque involved

Quite easy to make a train engine in the grand scheme of things. All it has to do one thing, sit at peak torque all day and night while not have to meet any emission or fuel economy standards.

I thought the reference to trains was about their electric drive motors, not the diesel running the genset?

It's clear that a train moving all that weight requires less torque than a Ranger going up a hill.

They also do 0-200kmph in 40mins from a standing start with no torque at all (rolling down an ever so small hill)

After the BYD, another Chinese Hybrid 4x4 is on its way,
China has fired fresh shots in its drive to claim ground in the Australian car industry. Great Wall Motors has locked in Australian pricing for its plug-in hybrid GWM Cannon Alpha ute, a rival to the BYD Shark that promises to take ground from segment leaders such as the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger. Priced from $63,990 drive-away, the GWM Cannon Alpha promises up to 110km of electric driving range, or 880km with a fully charged battery and a full tank of fuel. It should be quicker than most utes, with combined 300kW and 750Nm emanating from a 120kW electric motor and a 2.0-litre turbo petrol motor with 180kW and 380Nm. Expected fuel economy of 1.7L/100km is impressive on paper, but like all plug-in hybrids, that figure could be hard to match in the real world. Other important numbers include 3500kg maximum towing capacity that matches the Ranger and betters the Shark, maximum water wading depth of 800mm, and a sturdy 2.81 tonne kerb weight. This segment of the market will be interesting to watch as more and more arrive

I read the GWM has low range, front and rear diff locks.
Might beat the Ranger to market. Ford seem to have gone quiet on when PHEV Ranger is available? |

Car expert chat with our mate had an interesting chat about this new arrival comparing it to Ranger .. like the bloke or not, they both highlight that in theory the Great Wall might spank the BYD and give the ranger plug in a red bum too
Especially due to battery and price https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IW8H2F1Fdg

Ford.co.uk have a price for the PHEV.
They quote it as from 40,830 GBP excluding VAT. Compare that to their current price for an XLT with no options of 33,480 GBP and I'd say that's a reasonable premium for the PHEV. It makes an XLT PHEV about the same prices as a 2.0 Wildtrak for reference a Raptor starts at 47,800GBP |

yup. the cars may be crap (at the moment) but the price is very attractive, especially to buyers who see these as white goods. I really don't think the historic manufacturers can keep charging a premium for much longer

I’ve gotta admit, I’m now in that category after a recent trip in search of a new / newish car,
Only things that caught my eye was a Gulia quattrofolglio and a cupra formentor. After that, everything else was a take it or leave it thing for me to the point we have now decided to keep the Yaris as the daily local runabout, my GS as my daily / day trip runner. If I was to buy a new car now $$$ will be the first thing I consider ..

Anyway, to the topic at hand... I have a mate who has a BYD Shark due early march. Look forward to taking it for a run (already got the OK) and see how his ownership experience go's. He doesn't tow more than a box trailer to a dump, does beach driving but no other 4wding. Coming from an MQ Triton. Ranger PHEV will obviously get SOME sales from the hardcore Ranger people but the pricing will be a huge thing.. Ford website has XLT V6 at $75k D/a so you would have to think PHEV early $80k. Wildtrak V6 $81k so would think $90k. I mean, I hope it sells like hot cakes but those who aren't rusted on Ford buyer's, and don't get how much non PHEV Ranger is than Non PHEV Chinese stuff might not see the value in the extra spend...

Followed a Shark the other day, the ute bed had a fair bit of shake and it wasn't even a rough road.

Love the Ranger, but, who the hell is going to pay 30k more for it? The BYD sits under 60k FBT threshold. There is an excellent YT video with both Paul Maric & John Cadogan together(shock horror) they do a video together on both Car expert & on Cadogans channel ‘nutting’ it out between the two brands, thought provoking to say the least. The Chinese( or should I say) BYD are pulling no punches on this new ute,it is only going to get better.Ford have really underestimated & shot themselves in the foot.Even the GWM Cannon is a very good ute it seems. It is also talked about.

If legacy makers want to remain relevant in the market they are gonna have to chop prices to that extent eventually. Assuming the BYD is as good as what is reported, anyone paying more for any four cylinder Thai special have rocks in their head. |
