And as part of his salary package the crime was probably committed in a tax payers funded car.

Going to uni may make you intelligent, but it doesn't necessarily mean your smart.
This individual has inadvertently discovered that he's just as prone to mistakes and poor judgement as everyone else he's preached 'speed kills' to. Unfortunately for him his position makes it worse. Should he be sacked? No. But this is going to make it hard for him or his department to be taken seriously every time they make a statement on speed kills. |

Peninsula link uses point to point cameras to detect excessive speed. If he got detected at 108km/h, his speedo would most likely have been showing somewhere between 108-114km/h. Given it's point to point and the typical idiots blocking the right lane there I'd suggest he was probably traveling in excess of 108km/h for a decent amount of time. This doesn't appear to be a simple lapse in concentration considering the detection points can be 5-10 minutes apart. Instead it shows he was exceeding the limit for a prolonged period of time, not just a quick stab of the throttle in the wrong spot.

If he was found to have drifted over the speed limit for a prolonged period of time, he must have felt safe driving at that speed. Otherwise he would have slowed down, especially given his police driver training.
So all I can say is that it makes a mockery of the posted speed limit along that freeway, And having driven along there a number of times, I think that's a pretty accurate conclusion. |

I am not under the illusion this is going to happen , it is just a suggestion . If experience and training didn't matter everyone could drive busses and B doubles and fly any type of plane. It is only car drivers that are all deemed to be of the same skill. |

But be careful they may require additional testing to enable purchase of a high performance car for all drivers. Not all drivers will be able to simply step into an Aurion at the local Toyota dealer. |

The Commissioner does mention the need for "constant attention behind the wheel".
Watching the road? or Watching the speedo? |

Like a Boss*.
I figured it must have been a camera offence as cameras don't have discretionary powers to issue a warning, but the article says he revealed he was detected speeding "yesterday afternoon" and I doubt the turnaround for camera offences is that quick. So if not a camera then that means he was booked by a cop. A cop that possibly is about to retire and gives no ****s; or does not know the name of his commissioner nor what he looks like; or really lives by "friend or foe, in they go"; or is seriously ****ed with his job and/or boss; or is very VERY serious about his job. Seems weird that a cop would book his commissioner for such a minor offence where they have discretionary powers to issue a warning. Maybe the issuing officer pulled him over, realised who he was and went to issue a warning, but the commissioner took the fine as he knew gossip would see it all come out anyway and it would look worse for him and all concerned if he had received a warning when most other motorists would have been booked. Like the NSW premier that insisted on being fined for an illegal U-turn when he was initially given a warning. Maybe the article was poorly written and should have read "he revealed yesterday afternoon that he was detected speeding", and the offence was a camera offence that had occurred several days/weeks prior. Maybe I am thinking too hard (unusual for me). * Assuming VicPol also refer to commissioned officers as "Boss" |

Surely must be camera, it would be a brave officer to pull him over and give him a ticket.
But a camera clicks and processes the fine and the ticket is simply issued to some gov department that registers his car. |

Ah the irony, like the story of how the man who invented the electric chair ended up being executed in his own invention. Victoria police and the entire road safety/licensing system is a complete joke.

He gets at least part of it back as his government-paid salary. Traffic fines allegedly go into roads, safety, and traffic funding to help ease the burden on motorists, but we all know they really go into consolidated revenue to pay for things like the annual $70 million Melbourne Grand Prix, unsuccessful $200 million Olympic Games bids, and the bottomless "Arts" pit.
Anyway, Ashton's accountant will probably slip it into his next tax return as a "business expense" LOL. Last edited by SYZ; 11-01-2016 at 06:45 AM. |

That's an interesting tale about the electric chair, any proof that it's true?

Alfred P. Southwick was the bloke who invented the electric chair. He was a dentist, so he sorta had a good start LOL. Wife-murderer William Francis Kemmler was the first to die in the chair in 1890.

I would imagine that he was tipped off the fine was coming so they could decide to squash it or proceed with it and then how to spin it.

If I had 9 points on my license, would the cops hide the extra 3 points from my employer for two months if I was (say) a courier, in order to let me look around for alternative non-driver employment? I'm betting not. This is a classic case of the "them and us" attitude that all governments perpetuate to their advantage. |

http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/__data/...and_Ethics.pdf Point 10 would have him out on his **** as the driver would have to report the non issue of a ticket as misconduct, or be risking his own job as Police Chief, I doubt he would be willing to risk his job for some traffic cop on the street, or for the sake of a couple of hundred $$ for a ticket.

Not sure was Vic cops have to do with NSW police ethics either. Looks like NSW cops a corrupt as EVERY ticket I ever received from a cop (three, if I recall right) for speeding was down graded to the next lower speed bracket. Very risky for a cop to do me a favour, I should have reported the pr!cks.... |
