Deflection? no you have missed the point, its not whether Australia's reduction in co2 will make any significant difference to the world's co2(of course it wont), its about leadership and showing that we can reduce our per capita usage(about the highest on the planet) to sustainable levels of co2 in the atmosphere.

If we cant do that what hope on earth have we got of having others follow suit. CO2 emissions, its really something we all need to be personally responsible for, not hide behind the fact that there arent many of us compared to other countries so we can do as we please.

Interestingly the same people that come up with your logic are the same ones that harp on about pollies flying around in jets etc, deflecting the issue by saying, Ill start doing something when Gillard, Al Gore rides a push bike around the country etc(and I agree, they could be doing a lot more to set a better example). You are smart enough to know the amount of CO2 that they contribute compared to the whole population is miniscule, but its the message they are sending which you consider important, same scenario with the message we need to send by reducing our excesses.

Any third year engineering student can design a battery charger that has mains input voltage sensing and therefore regulate the Amperes that it draws in a regulated fashion so to not cause a voltage drop.

90A is the absolute maximum, which would ocurr for a very short time in an inverse parabolic charge curve...and the batteries would need to be dead flat.

Most people would charge from a partially discharged battery.

The grid overload argument is about as stupid as suggesting that everyone turns on the pumps at Shell service stations simultaeneously on a Monday morning all around the country.

Electric cars are so threatening to some, yet the range is acceptable (400k), the performance is sensational (0-100 in 3.7s), the fueling cost is negligible.

The only complaint is it costs $200k.

Well it's less than 90k australian dollars in the US.

(A simple stroke of a pen by govt and the 120k in extra taxes on the car would disappear in an instant dropping the price to under AUD90k )

Who would bother with a HSV or FPV then?

Better still.. to justify a tax reduction..make the bloody equivalent car in Australia at the Ford/GM/Toyota plant, create jobs .

Even if it's only a 100 cars a year, at least we would have a hand in the technology instead of relying on foreign imports long term.
