Ok, stop, hangon, you are missing a very important point. Down a 1/4 mile, an auto will be faster, I have said that, unfortunately, that is about the only time. No decent track car runs an auto because you just don't have the control and you lose a lot of power through the box. Remembering though, my response to Jim reaper's comment was about him eating while he drives. How many of you slam down a 1/4 pounder while driving down the 1/4 mile? Maybe in your auto, you have time.. lol
To say that an auto is faster and think that is a clean-cut rule is rediculous. As I have said, I agree that a tough auto will be faster down the 1.4 mile, but that is the only time.

There's more to a car than how quick it goes down the quarter. My car's never been on the quarter for example, but through the twisty roads, it feels a lot quicker than it did. My old auto, when I'd accelerate out of a corner it would stay in too high a gear for a couple of secs, then it would kick back a gear, then another 2 seconds later it'd finally decide to kick back another gear. After about 5-6 seconds of the auto arseing about, confused as to what gear it wanted to be in, it would finally have the power to accelerate out of the corner. The manual, I probably waste about a second, maybe 2 while I slot it into 3rd.

I am talking 1/4 mile and take off................. thats all that counts why would you need to go fast around a corner if your in front?

Also I talking about personal experience as I have driven both and the tricked up auto wins hands down.

And Dezza your correct in your comparison although your "stock" Auto was prob stuffed and comparing a stock auto against a stock manual then yeah a manual is more responsive but we are talking about tricking the auto up so this lag you talk about will be non-existant.

Well fair enough, different horses for different courses.

All I'll say at this point, the T5 conversion was by far the best mod that ever happened to my car. It might be slow compared to a tricked auto, but it is more fun, sounds nicer, is better on fuel, and is safer (no chance of it kicking back when on the grip threshold in the wet and launching me into a tree)

and yeah, my auto was stuffed. I blame that auto for every squeak and rattle in my car, it's gear changes were that harsh! It was always slow to respond, even after the new throttle cable was fitted, and had a habit of finding neutral between gear changes.

Yeah, stock autos are . Great for eating while driving(if you don't have the coordination) or paying less attention while driving. If you put some work into the auto and be in charge then you get rid of that problem.

Back to my original comment about eating while driving down the 1/4. I was meaning that I would drive home more quickly, then eat, with the time saved by not eating while my auto pretends it knows what gear I want.

yea that definately annoys the crap out of me too, the auto not knowing what gear it wants to be in that is.

well this thread has not exactly answered my question; what i wanted to know was should i do the conversion or not? with so many conflicting yet very valid arguments it has actually made the decision harder lol.......

I answered it earlier, with another question:

What do you want from your car?
If you want fast 1/4 mile times, go an auto.
If you want to eat while you are driving and don't have the coordination to change gears while eating or have a missus to put the food in your face for you, get an auto.
If you want to go drifting/track racing/have more fun/just drive more quickly around corners/go rally driving - go the manual.
If you want to tow heavy loads - go the auto.
If you do a lot of city traffic driving - go the auto.

Does this help?
It really does matter what you want from your car and what you want to do with it. It is not a clear-cut answer.

I loved the change from auto to manual in my ef, it may not be faster who knows.. but i feels nicer to drive. If i lived in the city i wouldnt have converted how ever out here in the country its awesome. Much nicer driving experience. Plus not many people out here expect to see a manual EF/EL

^ not wrong ppl just expect a family car to be auto, it gets a few werid looks when they find out its manual..also happens when i chirp 3rd lol

It also gets looks when you you see a family car stall it up to 3000rpm at the lights :evil3: :evil3: :evil3:
And there is also nothing like seeing auto step out when it changes gears (thanks to a shift kit), so unexpected.

You can do all that in a manual too. Rev up to 3000 then drop the clutch, and have the back step out when I change gears, along with a nice popping sound from the exhaust. Lets just say, while I don't consider my car fast, it has surprised a few people. I've even had some mechanics tell me it felt like it had some punch.

It's even weirder with a Ghia. Everyone think it's a luxury car so has to be auto. Then I surprise them a fair bit (it was more surprising when it still looked stock though)

Yeah but i can drop the clutch at 3000rpm and chirp it into second in my mini moke, that only has an 1100 in it, but if i seen an auto moke do that, i'd be impressed.

Don't get me wrong, i like manuals, and had things been a little bit different i may have got one on my car, but i'm happy with my choice and now i have a decent auto i don't want a manual in it.
And back to the question origanally asked, no if, buts, maybes or what if's, He said he wants to go fast, well as said before the bottom line is

-track work and hills = Manual
-drag strip and traffic lights - Auto

We've just brought an EFxr6 manual, and we've already got an EF GLI auto, if we lined them up at the lights, (over several tries and considering the slight differences in killowatts) and the auto won, then one could assume that autos may indeed be faster...?

If the auto was faster more times, then yes, the autos will be faster. However, the earlier discussion was not about stock cars, it was about a tough manual verse a tough auto with some work done to the auto. The stock BTR auto, as in your EF, drains a fair bit of power and doesnt always change when you want it to. Lets not forget the fact that the XR6 will be faster simply due to the better flowed tickford head, slightly better cam and slightly more performance oriented tune.

What. Power or economy? aka. Do you want really rough gear changes or do you want it to change a little bit earlier, slightly less rough, but still fairly bone rattling? Meanwhile in both modes, it's using more fuel than my manual. The only thing I miss from that is the green POWER light on the dash.

lol this is still going...maybe get a manual and a auto and drag lol, my moneys on the manual which has much better spaced ratios, and 5 forward gears!!
